Making D3 hires images

Post by Moebius »

I love the D3 HIRES Texture pk3 out there, but there are some basic textures not in there and others, like model skins that I would like to use. I've developed my own process of overlaying the *.tga or *.dds images in GIMP, but they just don't have the same look or feel as the ones in D3Retro_hires_v3.7.pk3.

Anyone willing to reveal their process? I'd like it to be on the simple side, like mine. Yes, it is simple. Pretty repetitive.

In GIMP
1. Open diffuse image.
2. Open normal image.
3. Open specular image.
4. Create new image of same size as above.
5. Grayscale the normal image. Select normal image, then Image/Mode/Grayscale. Play around with contrast/brightness. Do not save.
6. Invert specular image. Select specular image, then Colors/Invert. Do not save.
7. Select diffuse image, Select/All then Edit/Copy.
8. Select new image. Click Edit/Paste As/New Layer.
9. Select grayed normal image, Select/All then Edit/Copy.
10. Select new image. Click Edit/Paste As/New Layer.
11. Select inverted specular image, Select/All then Edit/Copy.
12. Select new image. Click Edit/Paste As/New Layer.
13. Select grayed normal layer and change Mode from Normal to Overlay.
14. Select inverted specular layer and change Mode from Normal to Overlay.
15. Play with the Opacity Slide for the grayed normal and inverted specular layers to get the best image you like. I end up leaving both only most of the time.

Image on the left is from D3Retro, image on the right is mine.

Hope my image shows up. Never added one before.
