Weird Slope Construct Problems

Post by Xaser »

Slope things suck. So therefore, I always go out of my way to avoid using them. However, sometimes that causes problems...

Okay, this attached wad is a small part of a nearly-finished map of mine, which uses dummy sectors and stuff to set the correct slope angle and the like. I'm not sure whether I just made a stupid mistake or whatever, but only the southernmost slope in the square box object slopes correctly. The other three sloped sides are set up exactly the same as the southern one, but they don't seem to want to work. Can anyone help me figure out why they're not working correctly? I'm stumped on this one, really, so any help would be appreciated...

Thanks in advance, heh. :P

I've always gotten wierd problems when sloping a sector that's connected to another one somewhere else.

Couldn't you use cascading floor/ceiling heights, and set the appropriate lines to the slope special?

EDIT: I made a dome, that's not quite as complex as this structure, but it's about the same thing (ceiling protrudes up, not the floor), and that's how I got it to work.

Also, sector 8 should probably be split into two sectors.

Absolutely. The ones that work are the only ones that are in line with the ones in the play area of the game. The other ones may be at the correct angle but they are not aligned with the part of the sectors that are in the play area. A slope line slopes a sector from the point of sloping and the slope is extrapolated across the entire distance of the level. If you have split the level up into little bits around the map, they will be sloped according to the angle of the slope and their distance from the sloping line. You need to align the dummy sector pieces so that distance from the slope line does not affect them. This quick PSP mock-up should give you an idea of how your level should be set up.

Aha! Thank you very much, Enjay! The problem is solved!

I had previously thought that they simply shared the same sloping angles, and not the actual beginning-end position of the slope (assuming that sentence even makes any sense). Now that you've explained it, it makes alot more sense. Thanks a hell of alot! That was the only thing left I had to do in that particular map, so now I can move on... and get this baby ready for release!

Er... HELLDOOM? Well, I wish, but that one hasn't been updated for a long time... this is for another project, which is technically already released, but not finalized... :P
