Re: FastDoom
Nothing works with Win95 OSR2 inside a PCem machine. It only loads the titlepic and as soon as either a key was pressed or time passed the screen covers with scanlines and the app says it's over. In DOSBOX it works nicely though.

Re: FastDoom
Given the platform target mainly being <66MHz 386/486 DOS machines, I don't think running FastDoom under Windows is currently supported so I wouldn't be surprised for segfaults (since even in the day, that's absolutely a thing that can happen with dos games under windows)...

Re: FastDoom
Thanks Lei. Nice to know it is out. Will update wiki accordingly, also with 0.7.leileilol wrote:Viti95 released 0.8 today, has more optimizations, BFG edition support, a new setup program, text mode/CGA support, among other things.

0.8.1 adds VGA (Mode13H like Heretic/Hexen so no low/potato detail here), EGA, CGA, and HGC modes, and an IWAD selector

Re: FastDoom
I've finally gotten around to trying this on my 486sx2/50, and it actually does help. I've gone from 20-25 FPS with vanilla Doom at Low detail, to being able to situationally hit 35 or even some times beyond, by turning off the floor and ceiling textures. Interestingly, text mode 80x50 runs the fastest, being capable of almost 155 FPS if I bury my nose in a wall in e1m1.
Running it in CGA 640x200 is good for a laugh at 12 FPS, and EGA maxes at about 7 FPS with the flats and skies turned off.
This is on an IBM Aptiva 330 from 1994, with an on board 1 MB Cirrus Logic 54xx video chip. I'm certain VLB would be much faster, if this board had it.

0.8.2 adds VBE2 video modes (which should benefit late PCI 486 systems i.e. AM5x86 160s with s3 Trio64 cards and S3VBE20 loaded, and perhaps Rendition sufferers)
Sadly my 486 had to be decommissioned in recent years (PSU issues) so I can't try this for real.

I also wonder how a Geode GX or Cyrix MediaGX processor would fare given its XpressGraphics, which emulates VGA.
Tested text mode and it runs brilliantly. It surely would be a blast on time specific hardware.

.... that just looks beautiful. No really.leileilol wrote:0.8.7 adds a composite CGA mode (among plantronics modes and 0.8.6's tall modes)
I like the idea of separate executables, but i am afraid i am losing count when every mode gets one.

0.8.9 adds a very beautiful 80x100/200 text mode, 0.8.8 from earlier has a dithered EGA 640x200 mode (slow!)
