Re: Hellrider v0.8b - Swift demon killing! (not dead!)

Post by Endie »

Hello, it is I, the Endie.
It's been a while since I posted an update here, I know, the thing is... I felt really unmotivated. Maybe it was burnout, I'm not sure, but after coming back to this thread and reading these kind words from you guys, that really got me back on the mod

A few days ago, I decided to try something new, again revamping one of the animations for the mod - the Mark 23 handgun reload animation, it was too... bland, I guess
So I made a tactical one. Here it is

https://streamable.com/i2bl1f

Along with that, there are some new player sprites too, however, I still need to get death frames done and player sprites overall are a pain to make, after that though, it is time to upload a new version
oh also, I updated the MP7 too. Overall visuals, so now it looks like this

Then again, I owe this motivation to work to you guys, and everyone else who supported me during this hiatus, here I leave a huge "Thank you", and expect an update somewhat soon
See ya

Thanks for the kind words, guys.
I'm happy to say, Hellrider v0.8c is out! The download button from the first page should be working

Sadly, I lost the changelog, but I guess you guys will definitely notice the changes made there

Nice new update! But here is an optimization problem, too many shells inside the map will cause the mod to map very, very horribly. Also, a little bit of quick note that some things kind of bothered me, mind if I can tell ya on the discord?

Of course, send me a DM or even on my server. About the "optimization problem", you can actually disable casings, so they won't decrase your performance

This is one of the best feeling mods to play in my opinion, loving all the small touches to animation and movement, really excited to see this get even more polish~

Couple of feedback points, the rocket launcher seems waaaaaay overpowered where most of the other weapons are in line with Doom's regular arsenal, and I also feel like the MP7 could be better suited to a third starting pistol option, with a melee focused chainsaw replacement instead.

I was originally going to provide feedback based on 0.8b but when you released 0.8c I had to take longer to play with that. :P That being said:

I was already originally impressed with the mod when it first came out. The one thing that's been consistent to me during its development is the satisfying feedback of all of the weapons. Even the H&K feels satisfying to use despite the Desert Eagle being the monster that it is. The H&K is a great choice for when I need rapid fire over stopping firepower in a mapset. Everything feels like the hand of God coming down to smite demons when I fire it and I absolutely love that. Even the Hatchet swings have a nice feel to them.

That said, I do have some nitpicks (and a bug report). Starting with the bug report, the muzzle flash of the plasma rifle replacement also flashes in the bottom left corner of the HUD when you hipfire with it.

Even though the grenade launcher is a meaty weapon too, the grenade arc can be a bit difficult to compensate for, especially when you need to use the weapon for precision shots (i.e. firing into the Icon of Sin's brain). It doesn't have the kind of drop off I've encountered in other mods with grenade launchers (the grenades in this mod actually have a nice bit of hang time before they start to drop) but it can prove to be a bit dicey when you absolutely need your explosive payload to hit where you aim it. I think that having it function more like a rocket propelled grenade when aiming with the grenade launcher would be a better alt-fire than its current sticky grenade.

Having three weapons occupy the BFG slot also feels a bit cumbersome to me since the ammo for them has to be distributed based on if they spawn. Some maps (I'm thinking more slaughtery maps) rely on you using the BFG for up close and personal combat and to have the ammo spread out between them can also make maps that rely on close quarters BFG combat dicey.

Speaking of BFG weapons, I ended up using the minigun the least because of how much recoil it has. I expect there to be recoil in any mod that has a minigun in it. However, this is the first mod with a minigun in it with such recoil that's hard to control for me that I've managed to slide my mouse off the pad several times in an effort to keep firing the weapon somewhat straight, forcing me to paused the game so I could put my mouse back on the pad. I only really used it when it was either the only BFG tier weapon I had at the time or when I was right in the face of an enemy or crowd of enemies. It's quite possible I missed a recoil setting in the mod menu so that could entirely be on me. :P

Despite my nitpicks, I did adapt to the weapons as best I could and I still enjoyed the mod. I definitely look forward to trying future versions when they come out. <3

I have a small question or more a suggestion ..

Since I absolutely love this mod and played it a fair bit I noticed that the plasmarifle has no weaponlight ..what I mean Is that when I shoot it the environment doesn't light up around me ...

Could You please please please implement this feature ...
I think it's only the plasma rifle (the fast shooting one ..not the gausscannon) but all other ones also could need a stronger lighting effect ..

That would be absolutely amazing...

It's only a suggestion..so I don't want to come along as a jerk not pleased with what he gets for free ...

Also ..I can't wait for new stuff you make ..thanks a lot

Heya, one problem: the Left 4 Doom mod with this mod made the smoke effects upon firing the weapons a bit too much, as in the smoke would be largely non-transparent and it would obscure the screen a lot.
