Donation appeal: Send lawyers to hell!

Post by DavidN »

Hi, everyone - I have a bit of a difficult topic for you, but I've run this past administration and I hope that I can phrase this in a way that doesn't divide people.

My employer has been profiting from sending supplies (specifically beds) to the internationally condemned prison camps on the US southern border. I want to make amends by donating for legal help (RAICES) to get children who have been taken there through no fault of their own out of these camps. Here is a video featuring my big stupid face.

Transcription is in the spoiler. The main points:

- Donations and WAD requests are accepted at paypal.me/sendlawyerstohell ! I'm thinking of the ballpark of $10 for a map, $50 for an episode, $100 for a megawad.
- Any amount is appreciated. If you choose to send the amounts mentioned in the video I promise to cover your preferred WAD, but if you don't want to donate so much, I really do welcome any and all contributions and will at least put things on my list.
- I'm doing this because if I can encourage people to donate through me at the Paypal link, my employer matches the donation - we have the opportunity to double our effectiveness!
- For the debate around "but shouldn't they have beds?" - it's a question I've wrestled with myself, and I think that the route of trying to offset the company's profits by getting them to help donate to immigration lawyers is the most straightforward way to help.
- Videos will be posted on my Youtube as usual, I will look into the potential of streaming if there's a demand for it :)

I'll be glad to answer any questions that you have.

Good luck. It's always good to see someone standing for the right thing. I know some people will disagree with me but honestly, fuck those bastards - all I have to say is - you have to be a fucking monster to want children to suffer in these deplorable conditions that they are faced with. It's not right, the United States is supposed to be a beacon of hope to the world, not a prison camp on the basis of your skin color.

Hey David,

I do not comment much on the ZDoom forums. But I am happy to see some one stand up for what is right.

Just want to add one bit of info here, as a question that's been nagging at me this whole time when it comes to donating anything:

Border Patrol turns away people wanting to donate supplies for detained kids
Democratic state Rep. Terry Canales of Edinburg tweeted this weekend that he wrote to Border Patrol asking for a list of acceptable items to donate. He said officials told his office by email they do not accept donations. An official with Border Patrol did not respond to a request for comment.

"The whole situation is disgusting, but I'm always hopeful that the better part of us as human beings will shine through," said Canales, whose district neighbors the McAllen facility. "Those children feel like the world has given up on them, and we have to fight for them."

Canales said he had a conference call Monday morning with Rodolfo Karisch, U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley sector chief, and had a "short but productive conservation" about the living conditions for kids being held in processing facilities.

"These kids are being underserved, and they're not getting what they need," Canales said. "We discussed diapers, hygiene products, and I pressed upon him that from a PR perspective that it looks terrible we're not meeting their needs and they're not accepting donations from the public.

"He, to some extent, agreed with me and said he would get back with me and see how we can collaborate," he said. "So the lines of communication are open."
So until they do in fact get back to him..........

Absolutely right, it's horrendous. This is why I (actually, the team of us pushing to undo leadership's mistakes at my job) selected RAICES as the charity to aim for - legal aid is something that they can't turn away.

I've now added a donation tracker Google sheet, to acknowledge that I'm receiving and acting on your donations :) Thank you so much for the great response so far - and I haven't even done anything yet!

Doctors will be able to go into the camps in the next few days by orders of a federal judge to inspect and assess the children's medical needs.
A federal judge has ordered US Customs and Border Protection to permit health experts into detention facilities holding migrant children to ensure they're "safe and sanitary" and assess the children's medical needs. Last week, lawyers asked US District Judge Dolly Gee to hold President Donald Trump's administration in contempt and order immediate improvements at the facilities. The lawyers are part of a team of doctors and advocates that warned last week of what they said were major health and hygiene problems at Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas following visits to the facilities.
"Children are held for weeks in deplorable conditions, without access to soap, clean water, showers, clean clothing, toilets, toothbrushes, adequate nutrition or adequate sleep. The children, including infants and expectant mothers, are dirty, cold, hungry and sleep-deprived," the court filing said.

Gee, who sits on the federal bench for the central district of California, made the ruling Friday, despite Attorney General William Barr and other defendants' request that the court "set a schedule for briefing these issues that provides defendants with a full and fair opportunity to respond to the allegations that plaintiffs have lodged against them."
Gee set a deadline of July 12 for the parties to "file a joint status report regarding their mediation efforts and what has been done to address post haste the conditions described."
So the children and the adults will be getting medical attention from the sounds of it. Which they should have been getting in the first place.

Anyway back on topic. David expect a 10 dollar donation from me come payday. :)

Friends, thank you so much for your support - I've just sent the second collection of donations worth $250 to RAICES, making a total of $500 - or $1000 after my employer matches the donation. Your generosity and encouragement has really turned something I felt extremely guilty about by association into something that's become much more of a force for good.

The full sheet of donations and videos so far: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... G0DMoHR994

I've got to go to sleep because I had a toddler kicking me in the face most of the night, but I'll post some of the videos and thoughts from this appeal in this topic soon :)
