Re: The new Doomworld Layout
Wait, what? Did they design that crap themselves? I thought that this was the standard layout of the software they bought. That I could have understood...

Could we not start something in this thread, please? >_<
I keep having issues trying to register. The captcha keeps telling me that I didn't pass the security check every time I try to complete it. :/

Please TONE DOWN the insults. Relations between our communities are spotty enough as is.Graf Zahl wrote:Wait, what? Did they design that crap themselves? I thought that this was the standard layout of the software they bought. That I could have understood...

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
I am personally not a fan of the new layout. But I won't judge them for making the change. They're as much an extension to the Doom Community as we are. Let's keep the link tight between us.

It's a standard reCAPTCHA checker, of the kind with the "I'm not a robot" thing to click that uses Javascript or whatever. If it's not working for you that is valuable information for me to have.Shadelight wrote:I keep having issues trying to register. You could also register by linking a Facebook / Twitter / Google / Steam account, in which case no CAPTCHA is required, I don't think.

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
I've gotten used to the new format and after Linguica disabled the excessive javascript cruft that had every page constantly polling the server to wave little notices everywhere, my single remaining pet peeve is the lack of raw BBCode editor.

Ah, so that's why it was so much worse on the first day. But it just reinforces what I think about the developers of such software. It's all overstuffed with pointless features that are good selling points for commercial customers but provide an overall shitty experience. I still can't run the forum with Javascript disabled because some things just won't work.Gez wrote:I've gotten used to the new format and after Linguica disabled the excessive javascript cruft that had every page constantly polling the server to wave little notices everywhere,

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
Please, let's try to be more constructive/polite here.
After getting used to how the new layout looks, I must say that this is the definitive format for mobile! However, I still think it can benefit with some more differences for the desktop version like smaller text and no transition effect when clicking around to view the next page in a thread. I feel that desktop should prioritize responsiveness & efficiency and mobile should consider sleekness & compactness (both in terms of visual and data).
I thank the Doomworld staff for coming here to hear us out, especially listening to the opinions of others who are welcome of the change, firm/adamant or even neutral.

This is unlikely - an ajax transition actually take significantly less in the way of server resources since it only has to query for the next batch of posts instead of building a whole new page view.unRyker wrote:no transition effect when clicking around to view the next page in a thread

Dont get me wrong, it's nothing personal but I sometimes think that you aren't as close to the active community as others are - I simply don't understand yet why it had to be this software instead one that's more "intuitive" - if one can say so but in the end it's propably what people are used to - I am oldLinguica wrote:A lot of the comments in this thread are rude and hurtful, to say the least.

I still don't understand what was wrong with the old layout. Why can't you fix the security problems (which I never noticed or even heard of) without touching layouts?

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
Sometimes an existing framework is only held up by decades of toothpicks, gum, and duct tape. The amount of weight on top of that only increases over the years as new methods of exploitation are discovered, and nobody knows how bad a security breach will hit until it happens. Better to rebuild and replace the toothpicks and gum with actual purpose-made framework than to wait.Nevander wrote:I still don't understand what was wrong with the old layout. After 18 years it is about time to proceed to a new framework as ww stated, especially if you consider mobile support - something that I miss here as wellNevander wrote:I still don't understand what was wrong with the old layout. There comes a time when one man can't do everything. From the sound of it, it sounds like it was held together by thin wires and duct tape. After a while it's simply not sustainable to hold onto it.Nevander wrote:I still don't understand what was wrong with the old layout. I may not like the software that Ling bought, but I will say one thing - it's pretty damn solid for what it does. I might currently dislike it in a lot of ways, but it was very well built and it does its job.Tormentor667 wrote:Dont get me wrong, it's nothing personal but I sometimes think that you aren't as close to the active community as others are - I simply don't understand yet why it had to be this software instead one that's more "intuitive" - if one can say so but in the end it's propably what people are used to - I am old
