As an FYI, /idgames links are working again -- they're temporarily going to the old site until some stuff gets finished for the new one.

No more "new stuff" list? No news lists as default? Wow, I really don't like this.

Exactly that! I agree with all the things mentioned by Graf Zahl as he made the right points.Graf Zahl wrote:Sorry to sound like a broken record, but that has to be the top priority to get sorted out. Most of the other stuff on Doomworld has little value.
I like the visuals of the new design, but I simply also don't understand why they spent so much money into the software. Beyond, the /idgames issue is not acceptable. But to be honest: Linguica is simply ... well ... there are people around who might be a better choice for maintaining a large community page.

It's good that they got it back up, but it was still a foolhardy move to disable it without an immediate backup plan.
And I hope they make their layout less screen-space wasteful.

A lot of the comments in this thread are rude and hurtful, to say the least.

People don't like sudden change. It's like the carpet is ripped out from under them.
Granted in this case it was desperately needed, very few will argue that. What's called into question is the actual direction that said changes went.
I know a lot of work went into this, Linguica - I am not trying to put you down or anything for that. But it's pretty clear that the choices that were made through these changes were not made to suit a lot of the more long-time users of your site. It seems a bit too gimmicky - which is a shame considering you had to spend so much to get it.
You've been doing websites longer than me - but if you had asked me, I would've flat out told you not to buy software for this. The free ones do just fine and aren't as flashy and annoying.

The most rude person got even banned over his outbursts.
Nevertheless, despite the forum appearing more modern now, for many of us oldtimers the site right now feels incredibly broken.
Instead of a plain and simple classic forum we now have to deal with some ultra modern software that acts quite differently than most forums elsewhere, the layout wastes a lot of screen space, the new post editing control can be truly aggravating and all contents aside from the forum itself are not readily accessible.

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
Just been poking around the new idgames/doomworld downloads section: https://www.doomworld.com/files/
For an established repository with thousands of files, very few of which have a screenshot/thumbnail, making the page so thumbnail oriented does seem an odd choice. Unless thumbnails are actively going to be added, there's a helluva lot of files on there that are never going to get one.
Also:
I would have thought being able to sort lists by filename (which is usually not the same as the map title) would be sensible.

Re: The new Doomworld Layout
Personally, I really love the new site. Things are still rough around the edges right now, but it's already a huge upgrade from the old forum, and the new features have given the community a more active feel with open, casual conversation, rather than having all the activity buried away like before. I don't think the status updates, notifications, and activity feed are "gimmicks" at all: on the contrary, they make the forum a lot more welcoming and a lot easier to explore and talk to people on.
The new file archive is still clearly a work in progress, but I can see the direction it's going in and it should be way more effective for browsing and finding wads with once it's more feature-complete and filled out with screenshots and such. The old archive was kind of a mystery box, it's nice to actually be able to see what you're getting.
Being able to browse and post from my phone without having to deal with tiny text and oversized edit boxes is also a major improvement.

Which would be much more appreciated if that forum wasn't working with a layout that's this piss-poor at working with large screens. Once a certain width is reached, all side space goes to waste. Unfortunately that threshold is far below what a modern monitor can do and gets compounded by elements that are way too large for the average desktop screen. If I reduce the display scaling, the elements do not adjust, I just get more empty space.
This was designed by an imbecile.
