Sometimes it's just fun to blow something away with way more powerful of a weapon than is needed. Smacking a chaingunner in the face with a point-blank BFG blast is extremely satisfying.

If I'm not running low on ammo fuck it- if I wanna kill shit fast then I'm gonna do it in style! RL blasts are a favourite!

Things I've noticed of myself (and sometimes others):
- Fumbling with the scroll wheel instead of using weapon binds.
- Lack of intuition on when to use certain weapons. (Back when I first played, I thought the shotgun was good for "hitting multiple enemies at long ranges." Whoo boy, was I ever wrong...)
- Standing still/hesitating/getting caught in corners/rubbing against geometry.

You gotta admit, it does a damn good job at killing imps on the other side of the map. Good luck doing that with the chaingun or plasma rifle. You're gonna waste half of your ammo.cambertian wrote:(Back when I first played, I thought the shotgun was good for "hitting multiple enemies at long ranges." Whoo boy, was I ever wrong...)

Autoloading *certain* gameplay mods and then complaining when other mods don't work properly.

All cases I've seen of that, funny enough, involve BD.scalliano wrote:Autoloading *certain* gameplay mods and then complaining when other mods don't work properly.
One thing that bothers me is people who use jumping/crouching/freelook on maps not designed with them in mind.

That's what happens when it's classed as a low-tier weapon (and given away at the start), when it should in fact be a top-tier weapon. (and given out later on like the bfg)NeuralStunner wrote: [*]Related to the above: Using SSG 24/7.

That simply comes down to playstyle...as long as everything is cleared (and not skipped), I don't see an issue myself.MarisaKirisame wrote:One thing that bothers me is people who use jumping/crouching/freelook on maps not designed with them in mind.*
*This equates to like 99% of all maps out there btw, so we don't really have a choice

Re: What irks you that you see some Doom players do?
One time I saw someone in a video of one of my maps rocket jump to get a secret that has a proper way of triggering it. I was both happy to see them use a rocket jump but also a bit upset that they just immediately did that without considering there was a right away. And of course, they jumped around with no regards to map flow. I personally always assume a map to be made without jumping in mind or even needed, and only jump when I have to or when I know it won't break the map. Then again most mapsets I play disable jump for me so I don't have to worry.

I jump and crouch around on every map i play and delibaritely disable the lock-down of such features on the mapsets that has them. Crucify me.

Who cares about this? It makes Doom more complete and pushes it out of the "old game weirdness" territory. Actually, I think that more mappers should now take advantage of the features you've said. Sticking to straferunning and getting on a same height just to plink at a switch is long overdue. Not every megawad has to be about speedrunning and getting a UV-max and putting it on a record.

Problem with that is, the Doomworld community is the one who produces our maps. Which primarily uses a Boom compatible port and often uses PrBoom+ for testing. PrBoom+ doesn't have a jump button.4thcharacter wrote:Actually, I think that more mappers should now take advantage of the features you've said. The ZDoom community needs to produce their own maps if people wants to crouch, jump or fly to a new place. Sadly, not a lot of people actually make ZDoom maps - and when they do.. it's often a large community project with varying levels of quality from Tormentor667's level of detail to '95 era style maps with UDMF features and a ton of monsters.

I pretty much only use these to get around backtracking "long cuts" that would otherwise needlessly consume entire minutes. (Though sometimes I do jump to avoid nukage damage, because being required to trudge through the stuff unprotected is lame.)

Unfortunately that's one of the few things that matters to the people that matter at DW's mapping community...which is why the whole mass-market megawad thing exists. (gotta become popular by pleasing them and the demo-runners)4thcharacter wrote:Who cares about this? It makes Doom more complete and pushes it out of the "old game weirdness" territory. What would be cool though is to see some ZDoom-playstyle demos...I'm pretty sure it'd look very different to regular ones (esp. one such as myself that uses all the features like 2nd nature). Trouble is, I don't even know the state of ZDoom demos atm, are they still really fussy about what version they work on etc.?
It's gotten better over the last couple of years (thanks to the DUMP projects) after the port was marginalised in 2010, but we're still not seeing enough of any kind. And tbh it's the 95-era maps you refer to that are needed to bridge the gap - eg. imagine a mass-market wad that uses ZDoom features intelligently to expand the traditional gameplay and in moderation to keep the oldschool feel.Hellser wrote:The ZDoom community needs to produce their own maps if people wants to crouch, jump or fly to a new place. I die much more often than usual when I play with Smooth Doom, because I can't resist getting close enough for gibbing with the SSG despite endangering myself. The mod makes it immensely satisfying to use.NeuralStunner wrote:

If I'm watching someone play the game and I can tell something is outside of their vision and about to attack them, either by sounds or because they didn't notice the monster briefly making an appearance in their vision, I become slightly aggravated. When it then starts damaging them, and they still don't react, I get angry.
