Which do you prefer? Doom 3 or Doom 4?

I actually prefer Sgt Mark IV's "Brutal Doom Starter Kit" megawad over the actual Doom 2 levels (even if he did manage to sneak in a little racism that almost nobody has commented on).

In one level, with a bunch of wounded humans, there are also some NPC soldiers guarding them. One of them is a ridiculous caricature of a dark-skinned African (huge grin, suggestive of mental retardation; it's also not present on any other NPC). He is also the only NPC there that you can kill.

Predictably, it went way under the radar.

edit: There is a lighter skinned African that you can also kill, and a woman that can be killed, for no obvious reason except to make the racism more subtle. I don't remember Sgt Mark IV expressing negativity for women, so that's probably a red herring.

I think you are reading a bit too much into this. You mean the end of map 13 (the makeshift hospital/Marine command centre), yes? I remember that one black Marine, but since nothing happens to him I do not count that as an example of racism. Especially considering that there are numerous black Marines that aid you in the assault on map 19.
Also, map 28: who is being tortured there? Only white Marines. Perhaps there are corpses of black ones, but for sure not more than those of the whites, and torture is worse fate than death for me anyway.
Checking whom of the civilians can be killed is a dead end: you are not required to harm them, hence you cannot really count this as a message from the author, that SMIV would intend to show to all players. This is an example of a meaningless bug for me, at best.

Well I can say that having played both now, I'm halfway through Doom 4 now and my impression is that I like both for different reasons.

Doom 4 has better gameplay certainly, it is more faithful to the original in many ways. Though the story and setting don't do it for me. And the whole bit about the doom guy being an ancient mythical warrior is plain silly.

Doom 3's gameplay was slower yes, but it's story was better IMHO and the horror elements were more believable. I liked Hell in this version much better

After watching the documentaries on Doom 4's story, I'm pretty convinced they intended to throw cheese on the horror on purpose. They said it was a design choice that hearkened back to Robocop. After all, look at the cheese on Doom 1's story- Daisy the rabbit being personally killed by the demons because they hate you? Being "reassigned" because you attacked a superior officer when they ordered you to kill civvies? Okay, so these guys worship you. That is basically saying something about you that you're powerful, and it's super easy to ignore too, if all you want to do is kill demons.
