Whats your thoughts about this new Pokémon Go app?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

It's crap imo. I used to have lots of fun with pokemons in the late 90s or early 00s and thats it. 'Cos i was like 6-7 years old.

Kids nowaday don't even know what is it. I bet that most people that use the app are in their 20-30s.
People are already focused on their phones most of the time. With that apps it gets even worse. If people need that kind of thing to go outside and do exercise...Humans gets me in despair day after day lol.

Must be a pretty torturous life, when the very existence of yourself puts you into despair.

I'm surprised you had the energy to crawl out of bed, much less turn on a computer, log onto here, write a post, and then post it.

I can't find the exact quote now, however, I do remember reading something like this once:
"Children's entertainment intended solely for kids is not good children's entertainment."

... so that's why the good shows of nickelodeon used to be filled with adult jokes!

It's also why the latest MLP is received so well by age groups outside the intended audience.

basically don't treat kids like idiots, i guess. good entertainment is made by adult minds, if you reduce it all to "hey kids, count with me!", silly noises and entertaining colors, you're essentially reaffirming that no one above pre-school and early elementary school age is going to find it entertaining, which makes it a waste of talent and money in terms of longevity. whereas the plethora of bizarre cartoons on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network back in the day is still entertaining to watch, because care and effort went in to make sure not just little toddlers would find it funny.

Is Mario suddenly "just a kids thing," too? What about Dragon Quest?
Or Doom? :P

On a more serious note, that particular objection merits only one rational response.

This is the closest I've come to getting an up-to-date smartphone since I got my Blackberry Bold in 2010. (Apparently the Android version on the tablet I bought in 2013 and never actually used for anything is not compatible and there is no simple, clean way of updating it that will not suck up an entire weekend) Until that fateful day I am dragged kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century by the sting of a thousand weedles, I will continue vicariously living through numerous friends on Facebook...

I think that this application is an utter misunderstanding what it does to people , " the water from the brain," literally.I have found about it myself when my friends were going to work and he directed and also played for Pokemon him because suddenly ceased to guide and took the game and we started to descend on the sidewalk , if I had not yelled at him that we probably would have had a very unpleasant situation , what any of you do not wish

I pretty much agree 110% with what Jim Sterling said about the game. It's poorly designed, simplistic, broken, and obviously missing major features. On the other hand, it's bringing people out to exercise, creating social situations to bring them together, spawning acts of charity among a demographic that hasn't really been tapped (individually), and altogether benefiting a lot of society. On the gripping hand, it, like every major social wave before it, is also showing just how dumb some people can be, though arguably it's not really inspiring the stupidity so much as creating a convenient scapegoat for morons who don't look to see if they're about to drop off a cliff.

When the 60-year-old security gusrd at my work is standing at reception explaining it to one of my colleagues, that's when I realise that we have failed as a species.

Poorly designed and simplistic aren't Pokemon at all, in any iteration. Missing major features and broken are valid complaints, but STAB is confirmed in the code *now*. That's not something that says "poorly designed" or "simplistic". Also, there's more for low level players to do than in Ingress, so compared to their last AR game they're making steps in the right direction.

Man, so many people in Doom forums seem to think themselves as gods whenever this comes up.

I was more referring to player interaction with the game in the early/average game session. I suppose AR games are subject to a decent amount of grind, but it does seem like people spend a lot more time just catching/hatching Pokemon rather than training through battle, where deep mechanics should be able to shine. A well-designed game experience wouldn't require several hours of play before introducing player agency, I would argue, and progression should contribute toward later game goals rather than being separate entities entirely.

Can't deny that. Ingress was not very fun at all, while Pokemon Go has some amount of draw and a very large player base.
