A tool to outline graphics fast?

Post by MSPaintR0cks »

I have a lot of sprites for my project, and every sprite now needs a black outline around it, to enhance the visibility when viewed in front of the colorful background textures.
Problem is, doing it all by hand would be extremely time consuming.
Spoiler: If you want to know what I mean, the effect I want would look kinda similiar to the silhouette used in JonTrons intro (0:08)
So my question is, is there a tool out there that can automatically generate a one-pixel wide, black outline around a picture? :3:

If you have Photoshop or a Photoshop-like graphics program, here are some generic steps you can follow:
  1. Select All, then use a Magic Wand tool or Select Color Range to deselect all the transparent areas of the image.
  2. Create a new layer and position it below the layer where your image is.
  3. Using a Modify Selection menu option, Expand the selection by 1 pixel.
  4. Fill with whatever outline color you want.
It'll still take some manual tweaking, but this technique can be used for "quick and dirty" outlines. Photoshop itself also has the Stroke layer style that you can use, which automatically outlines the image, but layer styles have anti-aliasing stuck on, which may not be ideal. Example image:

This should work right? Should be easy to make a macro that applies it to all your sprites in a few clicks.
