So, are the privacy issues just blown out of proportion by a loud minority then?
It's good to hear that it's (mostly) stable. At least they've got that bit right...

Privacy is only a minor issue tbh - compared to the main issue of MS controlling your machine, via forced updates and disabling of any software they choose. (it's not too hard to see where it's all going eventually, and why they're using desparate/underhand/sneaky/borderline-illegal tactics to have everyone upgrade to it)

Yes, they are trying to become just like Apple, who have been doing that for years without any consumer backlash. The Ultimate DooMer wrote:it's not too hard to see where it's all going eventually,
The end of the story will be that those who do not agree will end up with Linux while the dumb masses are at the mercy of the US software giants - unless some legislators finally wake up - but I think that will require another 10 years until the older, computer illiterate generation has retired.

They're not going to retire if they can help it.Graf Zahl wrote:The end of the story will be that those who do not agree will end up with Linux while the dumb masses are at the mercy of the US software giants - unless some legislators finally wake up - but I think that will require another 10 years until the older, computer illiterate generation has retired.
That's one downside to American politics. Once you're a politician, you're a politician for life - good or bad.
They will be screwing us over until they day they die. Literally.

Currently using Windows 8, and I plan to keep it that way for as long as possible. All of my games run beautifully already, so why fix what isn't broken and deal with the uncertainties of not being able to launch a game?

Windows 8 WAS the reason I put 10 on my tablet. Oh man, how can anyone stand that layout and no, Start8 is not a solution.
It's just too bad 10 keeps treating my tablet as a tablet instead of a computer, when I purposely leave it plugged in and connected to the network so that I can use Input Director or Unified Remote to control a keyboard and mouse on it.

But StartIsBack is, I used this until I did the Win10 upgrade. Hell I still use it on Windows 10 for the customizabilityDoomRater wrote:Start8 is not a solution.
(The trial lasts forever, once it expires you'll just get a messagebox at startup and the recent items list won't work, that's all)

I've been using Classic Shell ever since Windows 7 ditched the only good start menu that ever existed, i.e. the original Windows 95 version.

I hear you. CS goes a little beyond, though - I've got a full admin menu set up that lets me get to RegEdit and other "guts" utilities. Plus a handy pop-open that lets me get to anything on my desktop while my screens are full of windows.Graf Zahl wrote:I've been using Classic Shell ever since Windows 7 ditched the only good start menu that ever existed, i.e. the original Windows 95 version.
Too bad it can't quite redeem the horrible changes to Explorer.

I've stopped using that abomination years ago. Fortunately there's enough alternatives to choose from.NeuralStunner wrote: Too bad it can't quite redeem the horrible changes to Explorer.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
So uh, I took the plunge and upgraded to windows 10. I'm not regretting it for the most part, but is there anything I can do to make it so that windows 10 doesn't fuck my file associations every time I install a new program that just happens to overlap with programs I already have for handling certain file formats? Also did they block programs from being able to set associations from within themselves?
I am getting absolutely sick of having to verify that I want to continue using the currently associated format for various things every time I install a new piece of software with some overlap.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
So, it sounds like the overall consensus is that Windows 10 is fine (at least from a user's general perspective). With the deadline for the free upgrade coming up next week, I'm still trying to decide what to do.
My company's IT people have said it's fine to upgrade. Curiously, however, they haven't put out an official announcement that we should all upgrade our company computers. Go figure.

I'm scared to do it. That's it, that's all there is to it. I'm afraid of upgrading. In fact, given the option, I'd actually downgrade to Windows 7. I don't want anyone controlling my machine, it's not 1984!

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
So I took the plunge and set about upgrading. The first stumbling block I encountered was that I couldn't upgrade without uninstalling Symantec & HP ProtectTools. It's a heck of a shitty task to uninstall these. But I managed to scrape them off my machine. But the Windows 10 upgrade app continues to "see" these 2 (now non-existent) programs. I have tried to get the upgrade app to manually run the compatibility check. But no dice.ReX wrote:With the deadline for the free upgrade coming up next week, I'm still trying to decide what to do.
Hence I declare: F*ck you, Microsoft. If there was a middle-finger emoticon, I'd insert it here.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
Your attempts to scrape those things most likely forgot to remove the registry keys. I can understand that security software must make uninstalling robust enough to keep malware from doing it in the background, but this? I never had problems getting rid of antivirus tools I no longer wanted to use.
