Then by all means, for the class, point out precisely where the joke is. I'll wait.

Because there is no joke. This is the same stuff as "Damn Daniel" where, when put to task, the meme-flingers have absolutely no idea how to explain the "joke". you can't explain something when there's an absence of that something. Durr Plant.

This is nothing but an "in-joke" that requires layers of "you had to be there" to get. knowyourmeme even explains this. Because most people don't know the many, many "sophisticated layers" of today's dank memes, which really didn't have any "joke" to begin with, this isn't really funny at all. Why? Because there's no coherent natural memetic mutation pattern at all in this. To be a meme, at least an Internet meme, it must have a quality that allows new content to be derived off older content. I suppose photoshopping a frog on a unicycle until it becomes "a thing" qualifies as a meme, but this doesn't even pass that - it wasn't until it was forced through the usual channels - where "let's run this in-joke into the fucking ground" is the name of the game -that this meme got any sort of staying power.

FORCED MEME.

And I doubt it lasts, because "LOL RANDOMXD" Penguin-of-doom memes aren't worth the bytes they're encoded in.
I didn't expect to agree with these points, but you touch upon things that are questionably bothersome at least for me. Worst part about all this is how meme culture has legitimately turned reactions in the manner of 'oh my god no' into a meme itself that conveys ironic pretense suffering, as if laughing from faked 'pain' armpit tickle attacks in real life, because apparently ironically acknowledging something is unfunny makes it funny for everyone.

I really do mean this, though: meme internet culture should have stayed deep in the bowels of the internet, where it belongs. Forced Invader-Zim tier jokes don't make up for 'funny memes', and said 'funny memes' don't make up for lack of actual charm and humor.

The mod is pretty alright though, I guess. :P Just got me thinkin' myself silly.

I remember when "meme" wasn't even a word, at least that I ever knew. Upon first glance of the mod, I simply thought, "Hey, what a funny frog! Would like to add to my private joke wad." Just have fun, people, and forget all this meme stuff.

I got interested in the history of the word, and Wikipedia was immediately helpful.
A meme is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures. [...] A field of study called memetics arose in the 1990s to explore the concepts and transmission of memes in terms of an evolutionary model. [...] The word meme originated with Richard Dawkins' 1976 book The Selfish Gene.

[...]

An "Internet meme" is a concept that spreads rapidly from person to person via the Internet, largely through Internet-based E-mailing, blogs, forums, imageboards like 4chan, social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, instant messaging, and video hosting services like YouTube and Twitch.tv. [...] In 2013 Richard Dawkins characterized an Internet meme as one deliberately altered by human creativity, distinguished from Dawkins's original idea involving mutation by random change and a form of Darwinian selection.

Why do I get the feeling that these frogs are made of silk? It's extremely unnerving.
