What is your desktop wallpaper?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

This is what I use on my laptop. (scaled down)
Spoiler:
On my desktop it's just solid black, because I haven't verified windows 7 because I was lazy and then lost my key before I ever bothered.

I've done the same with my wallpaper collection since many of the paintings I want aren't widescreen or the right aspect. I'm using the wallpaper switcher Variety on Linux, which has custom ImageMagick filters. I managed to come up with one that fits the image based on its largest dimension, then fills the rest of the background with a heavily blurred and contrast-bumped version. Details in this post, code for the filter because I'm proud of it :biggrin:

Code: Select all

filter9 = False|Pad with Blur| \( -clone 0 -resize 1366x768^ -fill black -colorize 50% -blur 64x40 \) \( -clone 0 -bordercolor black -border 1x1 -resize 1366x768 \) -delete 0 -gravity center -composite -extent 1366x768
Here's the kind of results I get (click for fullsize):

i could never figure out why people would use a collection of random wallpapers that's being cycled throgh constantly, but eh. i trust it's not a system hog if it's that well-loved by users?

mine's just the default Win 7 one for now, since my other one is at service. that one's using this rather awesome picture i commissioned some months (i think) ago.

Currently my wallpaper is the reverse cover of the new Doom game (which I'm sure everyone's seen), but for the longest time, it cycled through about 25 different blueprints of various BattleMechs from MechWarrior Online. Here's one such example.

It kinda depends on your usage model. For me, the wallpaper is set to cycle once every three days. Aside from that it's idle, so the only CPU usage is when it picks a new one and applies my custom filter, which takes maybe 10 seconds tops.

Now if you're cycling HD wallpapers every five minutes, then that's probably cutting into a good chunk of CPU and memory on a consistent basis. Definitely stay away from that.

i was under the impression that "cycling the wallpaper every 30 seconds" was the popular method of doing it. your way of doing it, however, is fairly sensible. i'd perhaps be doing that myself if i had enough wallpapers to bother with it.

It's buried under full-screen windows all day anyway, and I don't keep any icons on there, so who needs detail?

Well, that's something new that I learn about. I'll be setting it to 30 mins then.

Also, I have a thing that I sometimes get bored of looking at the same wallpaper for a while even if I like it. It's more of a variety of pictures that I really like to look at.

This is mine i know it's something that's no longer funny but i'm too lazy to change it into something better. However my previous one was a pepe version of Mancubus spewing out shit from his weapons.
