Re: interesting words
Heh, defenestrate is a funny word alright
Actually the fact is funny that chucking things/people out of the window actually has an own word.
Interesting words I can recall are discrepancy, slumgullion, hodgepodge, ostensibility
I love how the dictionary tries to explain some of them. For instance, if you enquire "discrepancy", you get the definition: "the state/quality of being discrepant"
Gee, thank you Captain Obvious, you really helped a lot! *sarcasm alert!*

How about skulduggery? "Unscrupulous behavior or trickery." ("Unscrupulous" is also a fun one to say.)

i like amalgamation, which is the process of combining several things into one entity. i dunno why, it's a fun word i don't hear being used all that often.
maelstrom is also one i like, as you can probably tell.
it's a powerful type of whirlpool, but also refers to a state of disorder.

Blatherskite's a fun word.
A voluble purveyor of nonsense; a blusterer.
A worthless fellow; a deadbeat.
Nonsense or blather; empty talk.

Bumpness!
I just found two more funny English words, which don't seem to be utilized so frequently. They're good words tho!
"ramshackle" and "ostensibility"
I also noticed, how poorly dictionaries try to define some words. For instance, in case of "ostensibility" and "discrepancy". The dictionary blurted out: "The state of being discrepant/being ostensible". Wow! No shit, Sherlock!

Re: interesting words
It's almost as if derived words have a definition related to the word they're derived from!
(If definitions were that verbose, the average college Webster's would take up a whole shelf.)

Re: interesting words
the only reason i could imagine those being included, at all, is for purposes of aiding with spelling and figuring out the proper suffix and prefix - don't most dictionaries altogether omit the extra derivatives from the collection of definitions, and just list them under their base word in a list of "forms"?NeuralStunner wrote:It's almost as if derived words have a definition related to the word they're derived from!

also, zircon, zirconium, and the tetra- prefix - all just pleasant-sounding
a new word would be lugubrious - randomly chanced upon it roughly a week ago, it's a very specific combination of mournful, gloomy, and otherwise dark sorts of feelings
