if you're going to make the game small, then maybe it should've been only one secret level, perhaps combining Wolfenstein and Grosse into one level. because Doom only had one secret level per episode.

Erm, Doom 2 has many "episodes" too. If we're going in technical detail.Viscra Maelstrom wrote:if you're going to make the game small, then maybe it should've been only one secret level, perhaps combining Wolfenstein and Grosse into one level. because Doom only had one secret level per episode.

In ZDoom, they have "clusters," but IIRC there's not much in vanilla besides a text screen and a sky change.

yes, they're episodes, but you're still going a continuous playthrough of 32 levels. technically Ultimate Doom has even more levels than it, but the episodes helps with the pacing a bit.

I actually prefer more but shorter episodes, not only because it's a good stopping point (less likely to burn myself out), but also because it gives a pistol start which eliminates the thing i dislike about many megawads, when they turn into a BFG slaughterfest past level 7 or something.
