Is Doom really outdated?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

That's like saying Psycho is a dumb movie from a bygone era of film because it's black and white.

The Engine:Yes
Gameplay: Kinda.

Doom has the basic gameplay resources that any game uses today, but there're ofc things that aren't used anymore, like:
-no freelook
-no jump
-no crouch
-No HP bar
-no vertical aim.
-A face in your screen representing you.
-guns at the center of the screen

So, I'm going to say it's 40% outdated

i wouldn't really say those things makes the game outdated, since they don't hinder your ability to play the game. you can't freelook? no, but there's auto-aim that serves the same basic purpose. can't jump or crouch? no, but the levels aren't designed around that. HP bar? then what do you call that health indicator on your HUD? and the guns are centered so it's easier to aim them because there's no crosshair in the vanilla game.

Doom is old, yes, but if it were outdated, it'd just have its place in history and never be replayed anymore save for maybe once or twice out of nostalgia or our of curiosity. the fact that it's still alive shows that Doom never really aged, despite it being released almost 22 years ago.

I think the AVGN sums it up best:

There's a difference between being old-school and being outdated. Old-school means that it may be primitive now, but it's fun, and you can always jump right back into it whenever you want. Outdated is something you'll never want to go back to (obviously not the case here).

The Doom engine is outdated, but the Doom games are still fun.

Though personally I play new levels in ZDoom, rather than the original IWADs in vanilla, so yeah, if Doom hadn't been extended by ports and countless mods it would definitely be outdated (at least as far as I'm concerned, that is).

Of course, at least ports let it run in modern systems.

Doom is surprisingly up to date thanks to updates to the ports and custom mods.

Agreed. Doom has aged extremly well compared to other first person shooters of the time, due to their boringness(Wolf3d), obscurity (ROTT), and sudden series existance failure(duke3d). The mechanics are simple, but lend themselves to complex keycard switch up and down level design very well. While story is there, it is just there to give context to the players actions and location. Doom has aged better than most due to the huge community of map makers, modders , and people that work to update the games code, adding in features that would be in full 3d engines. Doom was never outdated, it just becomes better every year

Doom's a fine game. The engine (if you're talking ZDoom and not the original DOS exe) is more robust than a lot of hard-coded game engines, and the gameplay still holds up, much like how many modern gamers can still appreciate Super Mario Bros. on the NES.
What I think DOESN'T hold up is Duke3D. That game's engine has always struck me as clunky, what with doors that can swing open and instantly kill you and whatnot... Besides, I think Blood did it better overall :D

I don't think DooM's outddated by any means, but the original DOS engine is a bit clunky and less modular than more modern source ports. The actual gameplay is solid, though.

In the source code, during development.

This is one of only three extra messages without profanity.

It was also annoying when some source ports decided to force them on without warning as it seemed like horrible edgecruft. Even jDoom was guilty of this.
