i think it's more that both sides are portrayed nowadays as absolutes with no possible way for an inbetween. that's why the original trilogy worked so well: Luke wasn't a perfect, goody two-shoes like the entire Jedi Order in the prequels. he was an eccentric youth more than eager to get himself in trouble just to help his friends. that's a bit more relatable than "no you must not do what you want, that leads to the dark side!", because holy fuck just shut up, people are more complex than being just perfect paragons of justice or being the total Devil incarnated. though admittedly, Star Wars as a whole is very black and white in terms of alliance.

The grey side is probally ranging from horrible c@nts to people that are the standard non force using civlians that die en-masse in every star wars movie.

I enjoyed watching it. It's better than the prequels but it does have its issues.

Same here, it does feel like a re-tread of episode 4 more than anything. Nothing wrong with that though, just that it really could have been better as a adaptation of the "heir to the empire" trilogy of EU novels. Heir to the empire had some of the most engaging action and story in the star wars universe, with battles in space, light saber action, and interesting characters to boot. Not to say that the new characters in Ep7 are bad...... Just sometimes things like Rey learning to use the force all the sudden, and Luke becoming a hermit . The constant nostalgia pandering was expected, especially with r2d2 and c3po's appearances seeming more phoned in than anything. The first order storm troopers are a little more competent, but it befuddles me that they did not try to take cover against a frigging AIRSTRIKE! My only problem is that the movie draws alot of supporting elements from the EU, such as Hux being an more radical expy of captian Pelleon, but kylo ren is no Thrawn. My speculation is that Phasma is going to become more like Mara jade from the EU,as she draws alot of parallels from the character. Its not confirmed but the actor is cast in the next movie, so they must have survived being thrown into the trash compactor, and star-killer base being blown up
