But i can clearly see the diference: CoD playing is like Time Crisis (but without the fun of Time Crisis). Just a corridor, covering and shooting. Then a cinematic. Where DooM is exploring, killing, able to use lots of different weapons, running, evading, circling enemies, making them infight, etc, etc...Sgt. Pepperoni wrote:Maybe I will get bashed for this but even as a Doom player I still don't see much differences between it and Call of Duty in comparison to, let's say, Deus Ex 1.

Re: "Two CoD-Gen Idiots Get Lost in the Original Doom"
Y'know, I'm pretty sure if I handed Doom off to somebody who never played it before, how these guys played in the videos would be sorta how they play.
They do find out about those automap controls eventually, but maybe they just didn't know there was an automap.
I personally think these guys should be somewhat commended on the fact that they actually bothered to try an oldschool FPS and play through a lot of it.

Thats a joke, right?Sgt. Pepperoni wrote:Really I don't always understand why modern FPS are looked with such disdain given the fact they are not so different from Doom, IMHO.
Level design?
Weapon dseign?
Enemy design?
Modern FPS tends to have almost nothing going for them. Very limited selection of enemies and situations, very limited environments, linear levels...
There has been nothing even close to Doom in the last 10 years...

Weapon and enemy design is pretty great in many modern games, I don't think those are big problems. Level design is usually lacking though, but there are exceptions like DX:HR

game: you beat episode one! go play the next one!
"did we just beat the game?"
what is a brain and how do i utilize such a thing
and when did people stop checking how to play a game before playing a game
main menu > options > controls
should be the first things you do when you pick up a new game

I do not agree. Of course, not every game is a carbon copy of cod, but actually, weapons usually are: pistols, and "faster pistols"... oh, "scope pistol" with iron sight. And turret weapons! Enemies? Just soldiers, boring soldiers with hitscan. That's it.kodi wrote:Weapon and enemy design is pretty great in many modern games, I don't think those are big problems. What you're thinking of is the "wide" range of Military shooters.

Ahnn, actually B.P.R.D did Nuts.wad as jokewad, unfortunately it became his most famous wad, but besides this stupidity, he have done a pretty fair wad called Equinox too, also contributed on Community Chest 2 with MAP26, "The Mucus Flow" which is nice.

I'm thanking myself for having Half-Life as my first FPS game.

Re: "Two CoD-Gen Idiots Get Lost in the Original Doom"
I had a somewhat similar experience with introducing Heretic to one of my best friends. Surprisingly, he liked it more than Doom - he thought Heretic was easier despite the inventory system. I was definitely carrying most of the weight, though. I also introduced Quake to a different friend - one who plays more games than the previously mentioned friend. He did much better, although he's perhaps the only person I've seen (IRL) who can only play FPSes with a controller.
Maybe I'm a better gamer than I think? I managed to pick up the navigational and shooting skills pretty fast, and I'm good at both the controller and computer control schemes. Heck, I beat my mother at her own game, Dr. Mario, after only a few weeks of training...

I know 2 people here like that. It's odd because one only plays his FPS on consoles, while playing League and other games on his mid-high-end home-built pc.cambertian wrote:although he's perhaps the only person I've seen (IRL) who can only play FPSes with a controller.

I don't think I've seen as many player deaths in a video game as when they change the difficulty to Ultra-Violence after completing the first episode.

That really is a subjective statement.kodi wrote:Weapon and enemy design is pretty great in many modern games, I don't think those are big problems. Level design is usually lacking though, but there are exceptions like DX:HR
You could be talking about some modern FPS that's good, or you could be talking about modern military shooters.
If you are talking about modern military shooters, then I definitely have to disagree.
When's the last time you saw something cool like a Cyberdemon or Spider mastermind in CoD?
What about BFG9000s, rocket launchers, plasma rifles?
There's really not a big array of awesome guns or enemies in modern military shooters.

Re: "Two CoD-Gen Idiots Get Lost in the Original Doom"
Nothing in modern shooters really grabs you like in the older ones. When I first played Quake, I was shocked by the aggressiveness of the enemies, the verticality of the level design, and the intensity of the atmosphere. It is nigh impossible to find something of that caliber in modern FPS.
