It probably stems from the inate human desire to categorize the unknown. I doubt many people really care one way or the other (ie, we're not likely to see an exodus from ZDoom if the creator/developer confirms to be MFSLGBTQWhatever), everyone has been blue-balled with "maybe x, maybe y, maybe z" so long that they just want to know for sure.
I hope randi is at least getting some fun and entertainment out of all the helpless squirming speculation; I hate to think that we could be causing emotional distress or anything.
