So I just realized that I have Deus Ex in my Steam library (WHAT?!?!) and I think I'm going to give this game a full playthrough. Any advice for getting it to play good on modern systems?
What I'm looking for:
- Patches or fixes ONLY (for things like game-breaking bugs, patches that make the game run properly on modern systems etc)
What I am NOT looking for:
- HD grafic's
- Ultra parallax textures
- Direct X 20 renderers
- High res models
- Gameplay-altering mods
I just want to play it as vanilla as possible but with essential fixes. Any recommendations?

From my experience, Deus Ex runs just fine on Windows 7 and 8 as-is.

Just this over the plain game satisfies me.

Yes, use either the GL renderer Leilei linked or the Direct3D 10 renderer.

Re: Deus Ex 2015 but vanilla
Much to my surprise, the game actually ran at normal speed right after I installed it and ran it from Steam. No mods. This is very different from a previous experience that I had before where the intro cutscene would run at like ten million FPS. It was pretty playable at first but I then I decided to install Kentie's rendererer. Lastly I installed a pack that "fixed" the maps because apparently the GOTY version uses old versions of the maps. Played for 3 hours. :D This game is amazing.

There is fan-made Deus Ex unofficial patch http://www.offtopicproductions.com/foru ... 36&t=10132 that fix some stupidity and exploits like you can pick any door with just single lockpick as long you pause the game during picking. And don't forget the infamous Malkavian Mod...

Don't play UnrealEngine1 games on laptops if you can't fix the CPU frequency.Nash wrote:This is very different from a previous experience that I had before where the intro cutscene would run at like ten million FPS.

Yeah, already installed that patch.. I'm fine with fixes like this! As long as it doesn't alter the game's vanilla balance in favour of the person who made the patch...NantoCodd wrote:There is fan-made Deus Ex unofficial patch http://www.offtopicproductions.com/foru ... 36&t=10132 that fix some stupidity and exploits like you can pick any door with just single lockpick as long you pause the game during picking. Might as well re-use this thread instead of making a new one.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get rid of the ... uhhh... Milkshape3D-lighting in Deus Ex? I don't know how to explain it but you can easily see it on cube-shaped objects like the crates and boxes. The surfaces have this weird triangular shading and the shading even changed depending on where you stand, making it look like you're emitting a light source. :S

Learn to love it - that fake gouraud rim lighting comes standard with all UE1 games. It's how Sweeney does it and in fact I want to replicate it. It's more pronounced in shadows giving strong chiaroscuro effects (which Deus Ex is full of of course)

I wasn't sure it was a UE1 thing until I read your post and ran around in Unreal GOTY and noticed the same kind of shading (I don't play Unreal enough to notice it before). :S
Reminds me of the really bad vertex lighting In some PS2 games

I haven't tested this yet but I heard this kentie patch works great with the Steam version. It does work with retail version, I can confirm that.
EDIT: It does work with Steam version. That I can confirm as well.

It makes the game playable on modern systems with higher resolutions & other goodies.
Have fun.
