Re-Exhumed [Public Test 1.2]

Projects that have specifically been abandoned or considered "dead" get moved here, so people will quit bumping them. If your project has wound up here and it should not be, contact a moderator to have it moved back to the land of the living.

You can be lucky MaxED that Kaiser's project got cancelled. But why didn't you get a message from the copyright owner ?

The situation regarding Powerslave EX is really ambiguous at this point, especially in that Kaiser cannot talk about it. Let's not assume anything.

What's your opinion on all of that?

Do you think those companies who are currently buying up all former abandonware are shooting themselves in the foot by actions such as this?

The difference between PS EX and RE is akin to the difference between Doom64 EX if it was shipped with the ROM and the Absolution TC. I don't think you can say MaxED is lucky that the other project is currently in limbo, because they weren't in competition to begin with.

Abandonware does not exist. It is a concept created by people who do not want to admit that what they are doing is illegal.
Copyright still lasts for 60+ (Actually 100+, I believe...) years after the company has stopped existing.

Stop trying to find loopholes or ways to not have to admit that what you are doing is illegal. Just admit it. I do it myself and admit it.

If we have orphan works inside the web, somebody wants to adopt them then.

You should consider becoming a lawyer.

I think it would suit you.

I don't understand why people consistently feel the need to jump on orphanware projects like this and didactically inform everyone that they're BREAKIN' THE LAWWWWW, as if everyone else was too dumb to understand copyright law.

What the hell is that even supposed to mean?

I just told Doom Juan that abandonware is a thing that does not exist and that he should stop using that term.
(Hint, copyright stays until after the author dies/company stops existing + some years. For individuals I believe it's 75 years, and for companies I believe it's 100+ years.)

Copyright law isn't the same everywhere.
And I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't understand the concept of copyright.

It doesn't help that there are so many provisions and exceptions to copyright laws around the world that the entire thing is a maze. There's a reason there are lawyers who specialize entirely in copyright-related cases, and there's a reason those lawyers get paid so much.

All you need to do is to transform the copyrighted product (for example, by adding a FILE_ID.DIZ file to the image) and then have Rich Prince's lawyers and you can get away with all the warez in the world. May not be applicable if you are not a Rich Prince yourself; because the idea that the law is the same for everyone is a good joke, but not a reality.

Sure is a shame what happened to Kaiser, I can only hope that he and Nightdrive are working together on a new be-all-end-all Powerslave port similarly to their previous efforts on Strife: Veteran Edition. Otherwise I'd be very sad.

As far as I understand, I think Kaiser is allowed to work on Powerslave EX as long he doesn't distribute the game files with it.
