I've been wandering around the ZDoom community only spiritually, meaning that I've been too (anxious?) to actually create an account, but the generous part of me made me do it. Referring to my Resources post from like half an hour ago.
Anyways, I've secretly been modding and mapping behind the scenes, although I am still a Pvt. Noobius in mapping. I love taking mods apart, frankensteining different pieces of mods together or making complete overhauls/rebalances to existing ones, without actually releasing them. The latter is true mostly because of the fact that I haven't talked to any of the mod developers which kinda makes my work illegal for release. But don't worry, you won't see anything "stolen" without permission getting published by me. Nope. I'm a law-abiding citizen.
When I'm not busy modding, I'm usually busy Photoshopping instead. It never seems to end, does it?
Hello. My nickname is Seekay. Male, turning 18 in a few weeks, from Germany. Never really interacted with a dedicated Doom community before. Maybe someone is interested in my boring stories. I actually wrote so much that I think I'm gonna put most of it in a spoiler. Beware of shit grammar, spelling, and generally weird ass sentences. I'm tired and have a lot on my mind.
My first Doom game was Doom 3. It was fun, but it didn't really catch me. Took me years to actually try out Classic Doom. I also played Quake 1, 2 and 3 before I played Doom 1. First time I played was a few years ago with Doom95. I didn't know anything about the existence of source ports and an active modding community until a friend of mine sent me a link to Doomworld. From then on, my primary source port was ZDoom. It was then when I found my love for this game. Played through Doom 1, 2, the 2 Final Dooms, and a couple of episodes of Heretic as well. Tried out all sorts of source ports, Chocolate Doom, PrBoom+, Zandronum, I even got myself Dosbox to play vanilla Doom. Heck, even ports for GBA and SNES. Yes I admit I was naughty and used emulators. Was just curious how Doom would play on a bloody Gameboy Advance. Surprisingly well, actually. The SNES port was also sort of playable. Headache inducing, but playable. Kinda. Sorta. Don't judge me.
Spoiler: A boring wall of text about some of my experiences with modding for ZDoom
I've been making maps and mods for ZDoom for like two years now. I jumped from making (bad) 3D maps for Quake, Half-Life and the like to Doom. Getting used to GZDoom Builder took me a while. Had to throw out the concept of brushes in replacement for sectors. Making my first doors and elevators felt like giving birth, heh.
I'm still relatively new, my mods aren't that well made, although I am proud of some of my levels. I still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to doing some more advanced stuff in ACS and DECORATE. I really love how easy it is to mod this game thanks to modern source ports and an active community. I'd especially like to thank those that contribute to the ZDoom Wiki, you're doing god's work. Seriously, that site has taught me so much, it's awesome, I love it. 10/10. Best Wiki. BEST WIKI.
I kind of have a bunch of problems when making levels. Like, when I was new to Doom mapping, I just went for it. Texture alignment, lighting, decoration, environmental story telling etc. didn't really matter to me. At that time I still didn't know how to edit wads, lel. It was just ugly, nonsensical but kinda fun level design. Now that I have the knowledge of some basic ACS and have played some high quality mods, I constantly worry more about how the level looks than how the level plays. I dunno, and even knowing this doesn't change much. I start with a simple rectangle sector, then I add a sector within the sector and change the ceiling and floor. Then I add some lights to it. Then I add some dead marines, and put a clip there, or a gun. Now I wonder if the player should enter the level with a clear inventory or a normal pistol start or maybe some crazy shenanigans happen first, like you're starting with a black screen and you're totally frozen and you hear demons fighting marines, then some door sounds, then the black fades away and you see a bunch of zombies and demons teleporting out of the room. Then I get an idea for some cool gimmicky thing, like a light switch that can be used to turn the lights on/off repeatedly. Then I do some weird detail stuff for walls and the ceiling, and after about an hour, I have finished one bloody room, in which you spend about 10 seconds in-game. Back when I was new, I could have made an entire level, or at least most of it. I can't find the right balance. I once tried to make a script free level, just pure in design with some minor details and decoration. That was fun, but I kind of wanna do more than that, you know?
That's why I respect people who spend a lot of time and effort on working on their mods to make them not only look and sound awesome, but are a lot of fun to play, too. Played Sunlust recently, was kinda hard but I loved every second of it. I also tried out The Adventures of Square. Just amazing how creative people can get. Too bad I can't make any good resources like graphics or sounds and music on my own, that's another problem I have. I have like these cool ideas for enemies and weapons in my head but I just can't execute them because I would need to do good pixel art and sound effects... ;_; coding in DECORATE is fine I suppose, I can deal with that. But making decent sprites and sounds... ain't gonna happen for me.
I once made a mod full of silly MS Paint sprites and textures, with ripped sounds from all kinds of games. It was fun to make, but it looked shit and played shit. Was only useful for experimenting with DECORATE and ACS. And thanks to that I figured out how to do stuff like reloading, sniper zoom, etc., and made some weird stuff like weapons that fire projectiles that have a random effect, and powerups that use ACS to change some weapons, or something more simple like infinite reloads (although It was just secretly replacing the weapon with a different one that did that). I also added some RPG elements like gaining XP and leveling, with each level up you increase your max HP, max MP, ATK (that actually affected damage you deal with your weapons.) etc. Shops in which you can buy things with money that was dropped by enemies sometimes... a recent edition are generic survival elements like hunger and thirst. You have to find bagels and cups of tea to keep those numbers low. If you dont eat or drink and let those numbers get to 100% you will slowly die. Sounds fun eh? Yeah Doom is not a good game for these mechanics but it was just an experiment.
It certainly was a fun learning experience, and I can totally use the knowledge I've gained for more serious projects in the future. Thing is, there probably won't be any serious projects made by me. But that's fine. I'm usually just making mods for friends anyways, and they don't even mind newbie mistakes like forgetting about the Lower Unpegged flag when using the DOORTRAK texture for doors. Seriously how do you forget about that it looks so bad omg.
That's a lot of text. I hope you're still alive. What were you thinking? You could have watched something on YouTube or played some awesome levels. Instead you read some boring stories of some boring person that made some boring mods. I feel sorry for you. ;/ Did kinda feel good writing all of that, though. Felt relieving. Like I'm telling a psychiatrist about all of the people I murdered or something.
Other than modding Doom, I play mostly old-school games like Command & Conquer, id's other games and 3D Realms' old games, since I currently only own a very old laptop that can't even run Source games. But I'm saving up for a brand new sparkly PC, and I'm looking forward to playing the new Doom. It'll probably never be as good as Classic Doom, but I still think it's gonna be enjoyable. Can't get any worse than Duke Nukem Forever, right?
Anyways, I hope I'm not gonna be any trouble in this community. I'll probably lurk more than I post, if that's alright with you. I might take some of your resources for private purposes. Please don't hurt me.
That's all for now. Thanks for existing and filling my gamer heart with joy.
Welcome Seekay, and that is indeed a mighty wall of text. I've read most of it, and will finish reading it after I finish typing this. I figure since I probably won't have anything resembling a good reply, I might as well just welcome you.
Hmm. I don't think I ever got around to introducing myself. So, with no further ado...
Good day to you, sir. I am Grey Rook, and I am new to this board. I've been playing Doom for years but never managed to get any mods working until a Let's Play introduced me to Doom Explorer, which allowed me to take part in the treasures of the fandom. I have considered trying out Doom modding, but haven't gotten around to it yet - there's so many things to play, I don't have time for making my own.
I haven't been here long, but I'm hoping that we'll be able to get along, you and I.
Guess what my favorite color is!
Anyways, hello. I have been in love with doom since the day I could push keys on a keyboard. It has been one of my favorite games of all time.
I was actually first introduced to it by another person through Skulltag. I would summon abunch of bots on a deathmatch map and do stuff like freeze time and shoot a bunch of rockets into their faces. I got into the actual game part of the game soon after.
The first wad I ever remember playing was a Duke Nukem TC, and thinking that it was really freaking weird, I didn't even know what the hell Duke Nukem was! Come to think of it, I don't even remember where I got the wad. But the first zdoom wad I remember playing was Beautiful Doom. It amazed me how you could do that in a mod. It completely changed my opinion of what doom was.
I have attempted to make mods and maps to varrying degrees of success, but have never actually thought about what I would do with them. Only a few months ago did I have the idea of becoming active in the doom community. I randomly came up with this name, and decided I would go with that. I began lurking on both the DoomWorld and Zdoom forums for a few months. After seeing the 64k competition, I wanted to participate, so I finally got an account. This forums seems very kind and open, I'm very glad I am actually going to participate the community of the game I love.
Here is an example of my subpar work, it is probably over a year old, and my skill has massively improved since then, but it should give you an idea. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0cmUB ... sp=sharing
WARNING:3D Floor heavy
(Alright, I already joined here half a year ago and even made a few messages, but haven't introduced myself yet. Still, it is better late than never)
So, greetings, fellow ZDoomers! I'm LadySlash (or you may call me simply Slash). I'm a 21 year old (one week to 22) from Russia who shares her love to DOOM.
I've been playing DOOM for about 12 years. At first, I used to play Vanilla Doom until I discovered both ZDoom and Skulltag five years ago. Since that time I've tried out plenty of wads and mods and currently have two absolute favorites: Hunter's Moon (as a lover of everything related to Quake 3 Arena) and Russian Overkill (I'm a Russian and just couldn't bypass it)
I'm not a mapper, modder or spriter, but at my free time I'm learning how to work with Doom Builder. Back in the day I had some practice in editing existing maps and mods (like I once tried to merge together the Doom Reinforced pack (that one that, as I guessed, is predecessor of Hunter's Moon) with AEons of Death. Yes, I agree, that was rather a silly idea. Anyway, I was doing that just for my entertainment and learnt some DECORATE basics by that way)
Glad to join the ZDoom community and looking forward to make some contributions!
Hello everyone! How are you all today? I'm a long time fan of Doom (And have in fact been lurking the projects board these forums for years at this point), and thought it was about time I made an account here.
