The Wolfenstein SS now have a replacement. Since the entire goal of the secret enemy is to act as a throwback for development...well...I thought it'd be good to have a little nod to one of the big inspirations for this project, Shadow Warrior. So now the Yakuza are making an (edited) appearance and are ready to throw their lives away in a futile attempt to try and take down the Angel of Death with some diddly Minebea M9s.
...I say that, but you may end up relying more on guns for this one. They spam those bullets kind of a lot, and it quickly turns into a whole lotta diddly.

While that could be a cute idea, any maps that (god forbid) use any of those textures will suddenly look pretty strange, also there's not a whole lot of texture variety to begin with, so the effect of having really blocky barely decorated maps is kind of lost, and it suddenly starts looking like some really novice mapper's first venture instead.TheBadHustlex wrote:Maybe you could replace the wolfenstein-textures with appropriate shadow-warrior-ones?

i dunno, i think it could work. i mean, who else uses Wolfenstein textures for anything BUT Wolfenstein levels, unless they're really newbie mappers who fucks around with a bit of everything?

That's true. It'd have to be a pretty neutral texture to replace the bricks, though. There are a few that might work, come to think of it, but I don't have a texture sheet sitting around.

That's a shitty reason to replace something that people expect will remain the same. Suddenly the mod becames a partial texture pack, making other Wolfenstein-themed levels in other wads look incorrect just for Doom 2's 31 and 32. I wouldn't mind having a replacement map or two for a more unique and/or appropriate area to go through, but that's much farther down the line--and even if I went through with that, it'd be toggleable by a cvar (defaulting to off) so that you wouldn't suddenly end up there unless you intentionally wanted to.
Like Undead and torrid said, this is a gameplay mod--a very far-reaching gameplay mod, but a gameplay mod nonetheless. The primary purpose is to go through mapsets we already know and love without any major issues. Replacing textures would result in, well, major issues.
In the meantime, development has been churning along smoothly, aside from a week-long break in lieu of another project suddenly becoming popular.
I've been focusing primarily on fixing the many bugs that's popped up and polishing up some of the rougher edges, so I don't really have any new screenshots with neat features and fancy new sprites.
But I do have a pretty flashlight that I'm unreasonably proud of, because melee-ing enemies in pitch-dark maps is a gigantic cock of shit. At the moment it's bound to its own key (because Zimbabwe doesn't have the Reload key yet), but it's infinite and lets out a nice stream that's an actual beam and not just a bulletpuff with a dynamic light. And it works in Software, too, though it just uses A_Light2 there.
