Re: High resolution sprites
I will say, though, the new imp model is probably the best HD or modeled version of an imp I've seen yet. Everytime an HD project comes out the imp usually suffers the worst. I think its because its very hard to make his face look imposing but as true to the original sprite as possible. I think this model hits that mark for the most part.

Re: High resolution sprites
That is a beautiful imp model!
I would love to see you do a model of the spider mastermind or arachnotron.

Re: High resolution sprites
I just checked out some videos of your old imp in action that you had on youtube, and I really do see some potential for this. Do you possibly have the spritesheet around that somebody like me or anyone else is interested could play with. I think with some tweaking this could really be a faithful, yet awesome looking hi-res imp.

Re: High resolution sprites
Your newer imp is awesome! I frankensprited it into an attempt at a faithful imp sprite. Really digging it. If I had the actual frames this would've been even easier. I really think modeling than post tweaking may be the way to go here. You guys agree?
Right now it needs more tweaking, but seriously HD sprites are starting to look plausible again, no?
Also human teeth are definitely bizarre looking. I like it!

Re: High resolution sprites
And Brutal Doom happens to be one fan interpretation of it. Considering Imps rely on their claws and fireballs to attack with and I imagine only really use their teeth for consuming dead prey, human teeth seem to make more sense anyway since fangs are more for attacking live prey.Captain J wrote:well, some people actually realizing they have a sharp and beastly teeth like what other obvious demons does, and draw them with it. check out the...generational yet infamous brutal doom's neck grabbed imp sprite for example.
but i guess people have their own different taste, i see.

Re: High resolution sprites
Human teeth only make sense on an omnivore. Even dead flesh needs to be ripped apart, and that's what fangs are made for. Still, these are demons from hell, not natural predators, so I think their main concern is with killing and causing pain. (Hence the otherwise nonsensical spikes all over them.) Sharp teeth can bite into throats or limbs, and evil beings are unlikely to eat their veggies.MetroidJunkie wrote:Considering Imps rely on their claws and fireballs to attack with and I imagine only really use their teeth for consuming dead prey, human teeth seem to make more sense anyway since fangs are more for attacking live prey.

Re: High resolution sprites
Personally, I like the human teeth. It makes the imp a bit different. He was always tip-toeing the line between beastly and goofy, and I prefer to try to keep as close to that as possible.
Also, there's no sense in applying any logic to a demon here. Its a stylistic choice, naturally.
If you take a look at the doom 3 imp you'll notice he has human looking teeth as well:

Obviously the doom 3 imp is a huge departure from the doom imp, so I can't really use that as a conclusive basis as to what ID really intended. Though I did notice that the slightly higher res version of the imp in the doom 2 RPG has flat looking teeth as well. Has their been no concept art released of the original imp?

The high res Imp's face actually looks kind of skullish, like a kind of warped zombie. Is this how ID intended the Imp to look? The teeth kind of look sharp tipped but still very human.

Re: High resolution sprites
Thanks for all tips and suggestions! Actually I'm working on hud stuff, however, I decided to take a break from this and play with some Imp sculpt. Here is one variant, but with some early wip materials on them:

Uh. The imp's skin seems... Leathery...
The imp's supposed to have fur.
