Re: Lasting Light V3.2 - Additions and Bug Fixes

@Ed: I never quite expected anyone to turn BOTH monsters off, despite it being possible, but I will admit that it is a vastly different experience exploring some of the original Doom maps or your favorite map sets in a new way. Some maps that I thought I knew the complete layout of became a winding maze of darkness. Good to see the game has an interesting "passive" mode.

I know passive play was not the intent of this game mode, but I think of it more like an unexpected bonus feature.

On a slightly related note, I was finding the lantern light a bit harder to look at than I remembered a couple weeks ago. As I get older, I find more and more that my tired old eyes are not exactly my friends... anyhow, to cover my own handicap, I made a small patch that entirely eliminates any flicker effect in the lantern's dynamic lighting (which admittedly kills some of the realism), and if you have any interest, you're more than welcome to use the code (it's a very simple fix), and even add another menu option to toggle 'real' and 'steady' lighting (aren't user CVAR's just awesome?).
Spoiler: Some code

@Ed: I just incorporate the "Solid Light Toggle" into the CVAR menu (It's a instant effect option as well) into Version 3.3. Thanks for those quick patch fixes I could just copy and paste. Version 3.3 may not come out for a few days. I'm trying to think up a third monster and haven't fully figured out its methodology yet. If someone reports any sort of bug or other issue, I'll put the monster aside and release a version with said bug fixes and your "Solid Light Toggle."

Was pretty interesting experience to me for one who's generally not into horror things, but quite an adrenaline pumper seeing how far you can get before being spooked to death XD!

Only thought I have to add is I'd think adding a very slight mix of orange and yellowing of the lantern light would further add to the realism of the lantern light so seems like it's really created by a flame. I don't know how these cvars work yet, but could that also be one?

Interestingly I tried this out with another mod and it was kind of fun running through the map fighting and trying to avoid your two monsters. :P Turned it more into FEAR than a straight up horror experience, but was still surprisingly fun. Only downside is that everything was pitch black other than the lanterns and stuff.

Re: Lasting Light V4 - The Stalker Seeks Your Blood!

Post by Ral22 »

Version 4 is out, with the main focus being the addition of the new Stalker! I hope you're ready to face a new type of intense fear!

New info straight from the master post:
INTRODUCING THE STALKER:
The Stalker is your newest nemesis to the fray, bringing along not only a passionate desire to slit your throat, but gender equality as well. This deadly woman appears through the inky blackness, surprising you and suddenly giving chase. It's best you turn tail and run as fast as you can or she'll make quick work of you with her gruesome cleaver. If you manage to outrun her and break the line of sight long enough, she'll let out a wispy sigh and return to the darkness from whence she came. If you manage to give her the slip for a brief moment, but she spots you again before she gives up, she comes at you with renewed vigor. Just because she's gone don't think it's over yet, she'll return soon enough to test your mettle again.

Quick Tips:
- The Stalker may be aggressive and fast, but is not the brightest being. Weaving through corridors and many rooms should aid in your attempt to lose her.

- The Stalker will appear less often depending on two variables: whether you're playing with other monsters on and the selected difficulty. Playing with other monsters AND on Easy will produce the longest gaps between her appearances.

Recent Change Log:
Version 4:
- Added the Stalker
- Added a toggle for the Stalker
- Added realistic (I guess) light and a toggle for it
- Author's Note: Please give me feedback on this. I'm not too happy with how it came out, but I can't think of ways to improve it. Also, Solid Light Toggle is affected by this as well.
- Added Intermission music
- Reform: You can no longer activate the Screecher when your lamp is down
-Author's Note: I kept getting "seen" by the Screecher when I put the lamp away to calm the Creeper and I found that to be unfair. The Screecher will still kill you if you put the lamp away for too long, though.
- Reform: Less delay between rock throws.
- Reform: Found a cleaner version of the title music
- Fixed a oversight on random music selection
Be sure to not only update your copy today, but have a calm set of nerves on you too.

Nice additions! Went on a mad dash all the way til some point after a few maps then got caught be all 3 at once, and got nailed by the stalker by surprise when I was putting the light out to evade the other two monsters at once, Eek :P ! Certainly a rush to avoid that one! Tough customer to deal with compared to the other two but rare enough to be considered fair!

The new lantern light color is much better now, I can see why you may not be happy with it, it's probably tough to get a realistic look just right, but still it's a much better experience with it, could almost smell the lantern fuel!

Only one other thing though I wonder about, is the night sky with clouds and moon supposed to be only seen when one is looking almost straight up? Seems rather high and would more imagine it being on level with a centered view if a player had sight of the horizon.

My first time on v4 :

"Ok I got away from the bitch..."

*five minutes later*
*turns random corner*
*stalker appears*

"Here we go again...*

*turns to a dead end and gets shanked*

The moral of this: the hedge maze in my endurance map really fuckin hates me

I don't know what's wrong, but since version v.3-2 and v.4, footsteps are no longer reproduced; and none of the monsters appears on the maps! I have to summon them with the console. And the stalker seems to not work properly; when she's wandering and attacking is invisible!!

@DeimosAnomaly: Since I've test this on two different computers with no differences between them, I can already tell you that I'm unsure of what is going wrong. Make sure you are using the latest, official version of GZDoom. The game was designed for and runs perfectly (For me) on the latest, official version of GZDoom. I have not tested this with the latest SVN, so there may actually be discrepancies. Be sure that you have the Footstep and Monster toggles ON in the Lasting Light Settings menu within Options, as well (Though they should be ON by default). Also, be sure that your copy of GZDoom isn't set to auto-load another wad (Say, Brutal Doom or something of the like) through the Configuration file. Finally, make sure you get it working at least in the most basic sense (I.e. Straight Doom II IWAD with no map-sets loaded). If you are still encountering a problem after all of this, please let me know and explain any other glitches you may be encountering.

NOTE: Typing "Summon Stalker" in the console summons the Stalker from Strife, which is invisible since no Strife resources are loaded. The Stalker of Lasting Light is dubbed "Scre_Stalker" in decorate to avoid this overlap. This should never be used, though. If the Stalker is not appearing in game and the toggle for her is set to ON, this is a glitch. Please notify me if you encounter this. Summoning any of the three monsters through the console could cause glitches and should be avoided.
