A good cmd-line based w32 zipper? (freeware)

Post by Chris »

Basically, what the title says. I went to zip up the latest build of WinZETH and the sources, when I realized that PKZIP(which works under Win2k surprisingly enough), converts all the files to uppercase.. and I know Linux/Unix won't like that.

The quicker the (valid) reply, the quicker the next ZETH build gets out. ;)

Why care? I think WinZETH is specific to Windows, where case doesnot matter?

Suppose you don't have WinXP. It's not a very elegant way, but in WinXP you can 'copy to compressed folder', which in fact means creating a zip file that windows treats as a folder (but it's still an ordinary zip file)

But the source code can compile as-is on other platforms.. specificly Unix/Linux(hopefully), where case does matter a great deal. Makefile, MakeFile, MAKEFILE, and makefile are all considered different files there.

Nope.. Win2k. XP won't work on my machine: 233MHz, 128MB RAM

Heh, is that the old DOS PKZip? :)

I'm not sure of any command line zip utilities, but I'm pretty sure WinZip keeps case.

Yup. 2.04g :D

It does, but WinZip is Nagware, and too bloated for my needs. I already have a couple Zip utilities(WinAce and 7Zip), I just need one that works from the command line like PKZip.

Even if DOS PKZIP kept cases, it would not matter, because the DOS (not VFAT) I/O interrupts all return upper case filenames.

But Unix/Linux doesn't have DOS I/O interrupts. The ZIP format, afaik, stores the filenames case-sensitively, and it's up to the OS to do any kind of conversion required.

Command-line ZIPper

Post by i387 »

Actually, PKWare does offer a command-line Win32 version of PKZIP that supports all the features of the windowed version. It _was_ freeware a couple of years ago, but I recently checked and they want money for it now. For those that like the command prompt (like me) it is THE way to go.

Perhaps you could find it by doing a search for PKZIP 2.50

Perhaps you could change to .tgz. Current packers can handle it. (Though none
does .tbz2 except their ... command line tools).

ok, I don't really know anything about this but, couldn't you just make the zip and then rename all the files to lowercase? Or does that defeat the whole point of zipping from the command line???
sorry, I really don't know what I'm talking about, I just thought it would only take 10 seconds to rename all the files to lowercase, but maybe that's the 10 seconds you're trying to cut out... ?

I've never used this, but it looks good/free/commandline:

I use both Info-ZIP's zip utility and Ken Silverman's kzip.

Why limit yourself to just zip? Why have 500 programs to open compressed filetypes when you can have just this one? It's pretty powerful too. 5 stars out of 5

You? As for ZDoom, you're doing CABs not ZIPs.
