Why are signatures disabled?
Just a curious question, I've been wondering why the signatures are off.

Because 90% of the time, they're annoying and only eat up more vertical space on the page?
Re: Why are signatures disabled?
Why not? :D
I immediately turn them off for any forums that have them. They're VERY annoying.

Re: Why are signatures disabled?
Couldn't you just set the Enable Signatures user setting to off by default?

What extra-important information needs to be in your signature, anyway? All I ever use them for is extra links to my website and maybe a pithy quote or stupid joke, and we've got the "WWW" button and the Member Title field for those.XCVG wrote:Couldn't you just set the Enable Signatures user setting to off by default?
Re: Why are signatures disabled?
The custom for most forums is to put those in your signature, and that's where I typically look. Here, it would be a good place to put links to threads of projects you're currently working on. It may not be an issue for people who have been here a while and know who did what, but it's convenient to be able to just see those and know what someone is working on and if it's interesting there's a project thread right there. If any of that made any sense.wildweasel wrote:What extra-important information needs to be in your signature, anyway? I don't mean any offence and I do understand that I'm a new member upsetting the applecart so to speak.

Re: Why are signatures disabled?
Keeping tabs of what is part of the actual thread and what is part of someones signature can be really confusing, and I too am very glad they're not on the zdoom forums. It is a thing of taste I guess.
The signature exists on this forum and if you want to know what projects someone made etc you can click their profile to view their signature, it is less confusing this way.

Re: Why are signatures disabled?
So why not simply default the display setting to disabled? That way those that like signatures can turn them on and those that don't can turn them off? Or does it cause excessive server load? It shouldn't, but I know forum software can be finicky.

Without signatures you have more clarity.
