[Project, Resource, Weapons] Conan the Barbarian

Post by ThomsonI »

Working on a Conan the Barbarian WAD (Doom first, then cross-game support later, maybe eventually independence), these are some of the graphics that I've worked out so far. Credits to Id Software, Raven Software, Apogee software, 3dRealms, Bethesda software, Capstone Software, Eriance (Vorpal sword, soon to be a Stygian sword), NeoWorm (various graphics and modifications of existing graphics), TorridGristle (Kukri, soon to be a sickle sword/short sword), Realm667 and affiliates, rippers of aforementioned corporate graphics, Alex Anlicker on Flickr for the cheese pic, jspatchwork on Flickr for the lamb shank pic, Abhijit Tembhekar on Flickr for the apple pic, User:Fritzs at Wikipedia/Wikimedia for the bread pic, and anyone I missed (please let me know and I'll edit you in here) for the original graphics that I modified into these.

Obviously, I grant permission to use this stuff, whether or not I finish my mod. Credit would be nice, but as long as there isn't outright plagiarism, whatever.

Wow.
That's... very good. Nice! :D
However, might wanna take some brightness off of those hands, they don't match the arms.

Thanks! I'm hoping to have a beta of Conan and his archer buddy Subotai ready at some point before Halloween; and Akiro the wizard and the first hub by the end of the year. Could be completely off with those dates, haven't done this sort of thing in almost 10 years.

I would change the color on some of the hands, but MSPaint's garbage, and I can't get anything else to work. I'm hoping to at least work out a spine for the final product before I have to ask others for help, since this is partly to make me relearn my old skills, see how they apply to the new ways of doing things, and figure out what I need the most help with. Since I'm most familiar with Doom, it'll be for that first, but I'll try to make sure there's cross-compatibility with other games as well.

You're darn right it is.
Use Paint.NET, it's free and much better.

Thanks! Loaded it up about 15 minutes ago and have already adjusted about a third of the hands (not perfectly, but enough the skin won't glaringly flash different colors in the weapon animations). My mom's even going to download it to fix some antique photographs she scanned for her genealogy records. I should be off tomorrow, so I'll try to finish them up and reupload tomorrow, this time in separate sprite sheets for each weapon.

Also, may have the Conan/Subotai beta up sooner than Halloween if it turns out I won't be needing Offset as much as I thought I would.

Looks good, unfortunately the palette is being raped a lot in there...

It would look like that because of the Duke hands. He could correct it a bit to make the color fit in.

That's really distasteful. :|

It's also a fairly common phrase, which I'm not trying to justify at all, but you know...

These look really good! ZDoom does indeed have cross-wad mod support, WildWeasel and I did it (okay, mostly Wildweasel) in wwhc-diaz and Xaser's Psychic also (I think?) supports different IWADS. You definitely have the graphics part down! I would try redoing the aforementioned paletted hands in True Color .PNG using the original hands from the games they came from to get a better depth of color and such. Other than that, awesome stuff!

I don't have photoshop, nor can I afford it (seriously, my first paycheck each month and more than half of my second go straight to bills, and the rest into my savings so I can afford to change that situation). I'm starting to get the hang of Paint.NET, though.

The palette used to be a lot worse, here's a before and after pic of one of the fists:

Image

I'm either going to be working or sleeping until tomorrow afternoon, and might be able to get on it then. I'll probably extract the Duke and Shadow Warrior hands myself (and the Blood ones while I'm at it) instead of relying on some of the already extracted (somewhat "pre-adjusted") ones that were floating about, put all the flesh bits (including the Cleric arms turned leather bracers) on one sheet, get them to be the same-ish skin color there, and replace the hands and arms from there. It'd also let me redo certain things that I kinda wanted to try (thinking about having the Atlantean and Stygian swords sweep more sideways instead of in the Hexen downward diagonal pattern). Neoworm's ROTT and Heretic extracts are already adjustable without much trouble.

The spell tablet hand doesn't have a bracer on it yet because I'm trying to decide if that much of the hand is going to be visible.

I appreciate the effort. But as you've already noticed, some of the sprites have inconsistent shading and lighting between the hand part and the arm part. The ROTT hands for example have less shading intensity than the arms below it. Just an observation. Good luck!

arm and sleeves are fine though, but hand is the major problem of course. it's too brighter then arm. and i'm really recommand make those hands darker. then it's should be done.
