So with our female protagonist, what kind of personality do you think would work? On one hand you could have the typical fragile girl just hoping to get what shes after and leave. Or how about a strong, independent character, that keeps going because of her cause and will power? Perhaps her independence and willpower doesn't come just from her personality, but from conditioning of a lonely or isolated lifestyle?

Obviously those aren't the only choices, just a few for consideration.

As a side note, I also might be able to help small a bit in the resource department. I've done spriting in the past, and might be able to do some sketches. I won't promise any sort of contribution until I actually have something reasonable to show for.

How about The female being both? fragile to begin with, an then slowly build up to be strong and courageous? We can show this through scripted slideshows/cut scenes. But i wona go for a NON typical approach on her looks tho. you know blonde hair blue eyes *cough cough* hollywood lol.
As she grows more resilient to her nightmares she becomes more aggressive with her weapons? giving her access to finishing moves like in brutal doom.
And i use 3dmodels for sprite making and then just render the model into a sprite image. so ive got sprites covered, all i need are concepts really :)

Alright well its good that you've got the sprites covered.

For the character I'm glad that you mention character progression. I think showing the character evolving over time is something I overlooked. Since many of the monsters represent personal issues/fears within the protagonist; if there are bosses (or something similar), those moments could be useful for having the character overcome those fears and subtlety changing their attitude (or even a sudden break through, perhaps similar to that in SH2 after the pyramid fight).

Very good idea my friend. For now lets concentrate on a solid background and a brief summary of who she is as a person and what she did to get her to where she is now in life. This would give us a rough idea of her personality and characteristics. Perhaps in the intro cut scene, we could have her speak about herself, gives us her name and whatever before shit goes to hell.

Ofcousre everyone is welcome to contribute ideas :)
Once we have a solid character then a artist would be greatly appreciated to make some concepts for the character for me to model up and sprite. Along with some voice actors.

I tend to get a bit wrapped up in this stuff, it's pretty interesting to me. I'll try and do a bit of digging to see if I can't come up with some details or other options, in the mean time I'd loved to see some other people's suggestions for the character.

Agreed! I also use dropbox, if anyone is using dropbox give me your emails and il add you all to the silent hill project with everything i have made so far.

I was also thinking quickly as a idea for the girl, make it so she just graduated from college or uni, and use her knowledge in whatever she has specialist/studied in to her advantage in game. for instance, if she studied mechanics, she can build or fix things during parts of the game to gain a advantage or to access secret areas. Of course this is just speculation :)

this is also what im capable of when it comes to spriting, this is from my other wad possest. http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=35530
I consider those sprites slightly rushed. Took me 2 hours each to model and another 2 hours to animate.

Just fresh out of college, Sheila Bachman travels back home to her family to celebrate, but a sudden unexpected detour occurs when a bridge near Ashfield collapses right in front of her. She backs up and takes the only other road availible to get over the river. It's a reroute that will change her life forever as this bridge crosses over into the mysterious and foggy SILENT HILL...

...where her car breaks down.

Now trapped within the confines of the terrifiying town, she must figure out the puzzles and avoid the manifestations, traveling between realities, to find some way to escape or join those who have already died there.

How's that for a writeup?

It seems good, most of the SH games start like this.

On her personality note; shes a college student, will start out sort of 'fragile'. So one could assume she's pretty intelligent, and perhaps sort of shy as well? Anyone else want to bounce more ideas off?

I'd prefer something like " a girl just released from the orphanage" start.

It's important to think about the global idea of story, why do you want to tell it. Though I think only Downpour and SH2 had a kind of deep hidden morality in it. If you have that morality - scenario is already half-succesfull.

Though I can't think of any good story related to a girl as a protagonist. You can't force her looking for someone if you know what I mean. It's just stupid because most of playerbase are male and they surely won't want to go looking for a guy.
I'm not anyhow related to this project yet, but I just think a college girl travels back to family to celebrate is too typical for franchise.

Mix of strong story like SH2, wtf atmosphere ala SH3/1, SH4 weird moments (like room hauntings, chasing "bosses", level layouts maybe) would be just nice.

Those are some pretty good points.

The first few games have you chasing after someone or something. So we'd need a good story 'hook', although it would seem silly if that hook had no connection to the story, and then the story itself breaks apart.

First thing I could think of is a family connection. An adopted daughter, or a younger sister.

For the 'girl just released from the orphanage', did you have anything in mind?

-----
Side note: If the over-arching story is discussed in depth in this post, most people interested in this project will already have the whole thing spoiled for them.

What if you made it instead of having the car break down, the subway car she's on skips her usual stop and ends up in silent hill?

Sounds interesting. I like the ideas people are contributing here :)
The trainstation idea sounds good, not so typical like the car braking down scenarios but instead with a train.

I was thinking maybe...
-Typical graduate that goes by the name Laura.
-Passing her degrees in medical science. Which would be good knowledge for her when it comes to remedies, finding an mixing herbs to craft healing potions an temp buffs. Ect.
-coming home from graduation, or work. Which ever suits the story flow more.
-takes train, train goes to a unusual stop known as silent hill which is unmarked on map.
-she would hear or see her younger twin sister. (Her only family since parents died for unknown reasons, maybe linked to silent hill. Could be good be a deeper story.)
-an is now trying to find her sis, an get out of silent hill I duno.

I like this idea, I was thinking that whatever degree she was getting from college should have an impact on game play. At first I considered something like a degree in engineering and suggesting the use of various puzzles. But a crafting system to make healing items (or whatever is added) might add to the 'survival' half of survival horror.

For the twin sister thing, what if the main character was basically the 'bigger sister'. Although their twins, perhaps she was always looking after her, and has this impulsive need to protect her?
