Soundfonts for zdoom
Soundfonts for zdoom
Does anyone have or know of some soundfonts that work with doom and do something crazy to the music? I mean like instead of trying to preserve the original sounds something that makes the songs sound really different, like a different take on the songs, a remix if you will.

Re: Soundfonts for zdoom
There are lots of soundfonts that will significantly change the sounds of the instruments, but honestly you're unlikely to get high quality results with them. A decent-sounding remix like you're after involves a lot of hard work from a skilled musician/producer; it's just not possible to automate that sort of thing.
Re: Soundfonts for zdoom
Define "decent sounding" xD If there aren't any of those, I don't mind to try one that makes the music sound like some acid trip cacophony! Can you direct me to one?
Re: Soundfonts for zdoom
Rich Nagel made some silly soundfonts here. Try DOOM2Sfx or PCBeep.
Also, get the Doom 64 soundfont for an otherworldly experience.

Thanks Gez. I download the DOOM2Sfx font but the archive seems to be corrupt... I re-downloaded a few times but same. As for PCBeep, I don't think I'm doing anything wrong as I have already tried a lot of soundfonts in doom using timidity, but when I used it there was no music...
The doom 64 soundfont really did make an otherwordly experience though! It sounds like whisperings in the dark, very horror movie style.

OPL-3_FM_128M.sf2's good to replicate the Doom95 experience (not really GMMIDI lmp timbres, but is a very close approximate to that of the Windows OPL3 MIDI device timbres)
Re: Soundfonts for zdoom
I find the best fitting one for Doom is one that sounds like a Roland SC-55. It's what Doom was composed on, and is essentially a superior version of the GM.DLS soundfont included with Windows, and chances are a lot of PWAD music would have been made with the latter as well.
Try to find one that has a bit of reverb. Not as drastic as the Doomworld MP2 recordings, but just a little bit so that it doesn't sound too similar to the stock Windows set.
Another good option is SGM2. It's electric guitar tone isn't my preference, but it has awesome instrument balance, so it sounds great with say Back to Saturn X.

I wish that one had a bit more reverb, but yes. I guess you could do that with Timidity settings though. BASSMIDI doesn't have an option for it...
Is there a way to use FluidSynth as a Windows MIDI device ala Timidity and BASSMIDI? Timidity works okay but it seems to crap out if it's been running a while and starts developing "fuzz." Plus it would be nice to have a more recent program. BASSMIDI would work but it has little to no options.
EDIT: Awesome. I got QSynth working with MIDI Yoke instead. Why didn't I try this before? Seems like I have to fiddle with it though because the patch volumes seem out of whack (The bass guitar in E1M1 for example is super loud so when it gets going all you can pick out is DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT)
Maybe I should just put in my SoundBlaster Live! Audigy card I have in the closet.
AirFont 320 is probably the closest thing that sounds good with FluidSynth.

The wiki's [wiki]software synthesizer[/wiki] article has some pointers on this kind of things.MG_Man wrote:Is there a way to use FluidSynth as a Windows MIDI device ala Timidity and BASSMIDI?

Yeah, I looked through those. I don't feel like putting up with Timidity anymore (outdated/no good GUI for it, it seems/'fuzz' starts appearing & getting worse the longer it runs/notes hang on program exits a lot of times), BASSMIDI nor CoolSoft VirtualMIDI have any MIDI Input capability (which means that they'll pause the game to load the soundfont whenever a song changes in ZDoom or others, Timidity/QSynth get around this with MIDI Yoke) and now QSynth/FluidSynth works fine but seems to have issues with the SC-55 soundfont from that video (E1M1 bass/D_RUNNIN organ are obscenely loud compared to the other synths)
