This is a bit of a tangent from the main topic, so forgive me, but... I'm seeing a minor issue with the 2.X builds. If I alt-tab without opening the console or the menu, or hitting pause, the rest of my system starts chugging a bit. This only happens in GL mode, not software, and this issue was not present with anything from the 1.9 builds or earlier iterations. Has anyone else experienced such an issue?

Hmm, I don't know about pausing, but alt-tabbing is fine for me. Either that or I haven't noticed.

I used to have those problems with the older renderer (as used in Skulltag). Granted I have gotten in the habit of opening the menu before switching out of games, because some of them don't halt playsim when they lose focus.

OpenGL is supported by my chipset, but it suck ass ingame. For example, with Chaos from Hell Invasion, I get a playable but crappy FPS.
Plus i prefer the "vintage" look of Doom, so long live Software Rendering.

Nope. You can thank integrated graphics for that.
Getting a new rig soon though, so that'll change.

Thanks to this AMD Card I recently got, I can run the latest versions of GZDoom just fine. Playing the Island Wad with grass set to highest causes quite a bit of lag but I can get away with the "some grass" option.

intel i3 2330m HD3000

Single player is mostly ok. But shotgun frenzy, survival, chillax, all at war, jump maze, coop, I get 0.5 fps! It's totally unaplyable. And the bottleneck is about rendering sprites, because if I look to the sky, to a wall where the map ends and there is nothing behind, I get normal fps.

I do remember playing coop under opengl with a Geforce MX440 and it was running OK. So either Intel drivers are to blame or Nvidia is just better at makign drivers. this is just strange because MX440 is a DX7 class GPU, pre dates programmable shaders, while HD3000 is DX9 up to DX10 features.

Wait, how did you manage to play Zandronum-specific mods (some of the one you mention are) in GZDoom? :shock:

I didn't play in Gzdoom, I played in zandronum. Is gzdoom's renderer better than zandronum?

This thread is about GZDoom specifically. Zandronum uses a very old version of GZDoom's renderer, so it's not relevant to the question being asked.

It's a lot newer. I don't know where precisely they stopped updating but it's several years behind.

Zandronum 2.0 is based on gzdoom r900, just before usdf and automap.

Indeed, a MX440 may run, but only maps with not many dynamic lights and the details like vanilla maps...

Well, you have two problems there, this weak processor and your gpu that isn't the best.
Why? doom (in general) is more cpu hungry than gpu, just to compare, I could play fine all out war, jump maze with more than 30fps, with an intel core i7 ?? 3GHz, and a amd hd3000. All out War video 1 and All out War video 2...
I see on many benchmarks that I did on my new notebook, the gpu itself downclock it because the bottleneck is the cpu itself, if I change the camera to a position where the cpu isnt limiting the gpu it goes from 300MHz to 800MHz, this effect is on amd hd8870m, but it happen too with the intel hd4000, but since it's weaker, it'll not give as much performance as the amd hd8870m (but, both got just 10fps difference in zandronum, so I prefer to sacrifice a 40Watts gpu for a cooler one).

The only thing you could do is, Add a Dual channel memory on your system (this can actually gives 10+fps in many games with hd3000), and se it to maximun performance.

=============================
There was a cool benchmark that I did in some thread here with the a special gzdoom build, I tried to download it again but the link expired :( , why I wanted to test it again? amd drivers got updated, and I noted that many opengl instructions are now implemented Now I can finally play this badass 64kb opengl demoscene *__*, still some glitches but now it load

=============================
EDIT: Ok I'll tell a weird thing, nowaday, I think Intel is indeed making better gpu drivers than amd D:

Ok, i'm actually having a problem with the new GZDOOM's build. I just downloaded it and tried out. But unfortunately, it doesnt work. I start it and it just make a black screen. I hear the sound and the only thing i'm seeing is the curser.

Here a screenshot of what i'm having. Note that it only do this with the recent build, my GZDOOM 1.8 is working good.
