I've yet to use a machine that can't run it well with most normal mapsets. Obviously there's a few extremes that slow things down, but them being "extremes" it's rather expected.

Yeah, it's probably worth saying that I have run GZDoom on at least 10 different machines and although the lowest spec machines (one was a particularly low spec laptop with an Intel graphics processor) ran it a bit choppily and without all the OpenGL "bells and whistles" I wouldn't say that anything that I have tried has had a problem running GZDoom. They have all run it in a way that was consistent and appropriate for the level of spec of the machine.

My laptop computer of a few years can render the OpenGL with all it's glow, fog and shine. It just can't render and process in speed at the same time. I go with the software and pixelation for the gameplay and to reduce any lag.

Runs perfectly fine for me, and has on all hardware I've had since it was first released.

I think anything from a GeForce 6 series and above should be able run OpenGL, 1024x768 with dynamic lights and no shaders perfectly... on normal maps (nothing large scale like Sunder or Stronghold, etc).

Based on all of these non-Yes (perfect) answers, I'm thinking a lot of Doomers are still on old hardware? :S

All? So far in the new poll I only see 1 Yes but crappy and 1 no. The other 10 answers are Yes, perfect.

Pink Silver wrote:Yes and no. I can usually run GZDoom's GL without a hitch, but considering it's an Intel GMA, sometimes it will crash (or worse, bluescreen the entire computer) and completely cease working to a point where I have to reboot the computer just to get it functioning again.
Been there. :( I was limited to 1 GZDoom per reboot, which is pretty pointless really. Remembering that time is one of the reasons I try to keep software compatibility in mind.

I have to say it runs excellently for me. Whether that has to do with having most of the filtering crap turned off (by preference) I don't know. :P

Also for some reason I can only maintain vanilla range FPS in ZDoom. All I can think is the renderer might not be on its best leg in windowed mode.

Can't run it because my notebook graphics card faulted so I'm relying on Ubuntu failsafe mode (no opengl).
There's no warranty so I don't have the time and the money to change the motherboard right now.

Is it me or that GZDoom cannot use software rendering?
How do you make GZDoom to use software rendering?

Type vid_renderer 1 and restart GZDoom. If it still fails, then your hardware simply cannot handle GZDoom in OpenGL and it's time to upgrade. :D

vid_renderer 0 to force software renderer in GZDoom. Requires restart.

Well, I'm on old hardware (5 year old comp with a Radeon X1300 pro) and I can run it without any problems (windowed too, to avoid the long screen flicker when minimising etc). I don't get shaders ofc but nor do I get low fps, except in the occasional map.

The opposite of what Nash said, type vid_renderer 0 in the [wiki]console[/wiki] (or edit the [wiki]configuration file[/wiki] to change that value there).

I might as well be playing straight ZDoom with this setting on.

I CAN play it, as in it opens up without my motherboard shitting itself.
It usually runs pretty slow, though, and it makes my graphics card overheat when I play for hours.

My computer is not designed for gaming. The fact that it can play a couple old games is a nice bonus.
