[WIP] Warhammer 40k: Demonic War

Post by Deimos Anomaly »

Desert Storm: Demonic War

===========================================================================================================================

-I work in another "war style" map, this time for GZDoom, using "Urban Slaughter" (my previous map) as base.
The map is ambiented in Warhammer 40.000, in the Imperial Guard to be more concrete.
A crusade of Imperial Guard batallions against more demonic hordes in a desert planet (inspired in Starship Troopers hehe).

At the moment the map is playable, but only have the "basic" map platform with many buildings; one fortification and one bunker.

-Need help on the grafics/sprites and ACS!
My idea is make the most "real" concept of war in GZDoom, with the troopers fight with you, operational bunkers, airstrikes, demolitions...
But i'm only a decent mapper, nothing more :3:
And too important, grafic artists who can create some Warhammer 40k stuff!!

-Here pics of the current development:

Stay tuned!

The decision to place weapons vertically is a very nice idea..
But the general atmosphere, the sky.. well, it seems to be on an asteroid in deep space! Doesn't this planet have an atmosphere at all?

Anyway, it looks COOL!

Is the night sky from the previous map when i use to make this new one! I need to remove for a "sunny day" sky hahaha
The "atmosphere" is much light now, i need to build more bunkers and bases, and later; the desert ambientation/environment.
Thanks for your interest!!

I don't know much about W40K, but if something, I have it associated with huge superhumans in even larger armors...like this:
Spoiler:
The guy you posted looks more like Halo or (the movie version of) Spaceship Troopers guy, not like Warhammer marine (I admit, I only played Dawn of War and have seen the Ultramarines movie). That's IMO a wasted chance, the marines in W40K are the pure definition of cool.

Yes, Space Marines are another faction in the Warhammer 40k, but i don't like much.
I prefer the Imperial Guards, normal humans armed with a gun and armour, like any soldier.

A great majority of the Imperium of man is defended by the regular soldiers that make up the Imperial Guard. Including Space Marines would unbalance things a bit. It seems that you're earlier mod led up to this. This is really awesome, finally something 40k graces Zdoom that isn't crap. I'd absolutely love to contribute some sprite work to this, but I'm already hard pressed for time on our project AVM. :)

@CommanderZ: Hate to also burst your bubble, but Halo is massively inspired by Aliens which was in turn based off of the original novel Starship troopers. Warhammer 40k makes use of it all. The Imperial Guard also look vastly different depending on what planet they reside on.

This is excellent, but it needs more Imperial Commissar.

I wonder if there's any way to simulate the Commissar's extreme propensity for shooting cowards/deserters/etc. in the back. :P

Also, will there be Psykers?

lol lets not get ahead of ourselves. I would love to see Psykers, they are one of my favorite units. Particularly in Dawn of War they had quite a few humorous quotes/battle cries. My buddy who used to always play as Orks would laugh every time he heard one screaming.

Do you plan on making the Former Humans/Sarges/Commandoes look like the Traitor Legions or a Chaos-allied Imperial Guard unit? Because the DooM enemies could probably make good ersatz Khorne worshippers.

Oh, and I'm guessing the 1st of those trooper sprites is a Commissar. I recommend giving him a pistol and a chainsword, as I don't think Commissars use longarm weapons very often.

Also also, isn't the standard Guardsman weapon a laser rifle? Looks like you're planning on giving them bullet-based weaponry...

On some back water worlds you will find Legions of the Guard using older weapons very similar to the weapons we use today. Even in Aliens you can see m16's on the Sulaco. Just because a weapon is old doesn't mean it still can't do it's job. If you look at the the Catachan Jungle fighters they look straight out of Vietnam. Warhammer 40k is a mixture of old and new tech.

Look this over and you will see they still use plenty of traditional weapons labeled under "Kinetic Weapons".

Ah, okay. Duly noted. Forgot how staggeringly massive the Imperium is.

Makes sense that the Catachans would use Vietnam-esque weaponry.

I think you could get away with having Space Marines as a summonable. Like a beacon that teleports/pod-drops 1-3 of them at a point you designate. Also, that much said, I think Bolters would be very fast projectile weapons instead of hitscan, as the lore describes them as something like fully-automatic rocket-propelled-grenade launchers.

(Sorry, I'm a huge nerd and like to nitpick/speculate on these things. :P)

I have plans to include commissars, but i need someone expert in decorate for make the "kill traitors" attitude, and of course modify the decorate of the imperial guards to be more aggressive and precise killing enemies, not run here and there like stupid and shot enemies randomly.
Include various types of guards too! Like standart guards, heavy weapon guards, psykers, maybe Space Marines as very special reinforcements etc... all based in Warhammer - Imperial Guard codex.

Is a great idea to include the imperial guard traitors/heretics of chaos as enemies :D

But at the moment make the map is the most important task. At first i need people who can create these grafics/sprites of W40k and advanced Decorate/ACS programing.

@Deimos Anomaly:

I think the summonable friendly Marines from Hideous Destructor are sufficiently aggressive and durable enough to survive in in a game scenario like this. Or the SpecOps guys from Woolie Wool's Mutiny mod.

Also, i think you could program Marines to have a chance of randomly going into retreat mode if they take too much damage, and change the entity type to COWARD or something like that. :P
