Critter Sprites

Post by Tormentor667 »

I am looking for critter sprites, like rats & spiders (although I have those alrerady) that you might encounter on foreign planets, earth, or buildings, running around or whatever, just to populate several empty Stronghold places. Does anyone have a good source?

I think there is sheep in Hexen 2. Although you can get their sprites with a model viewer.

Hexen 2 is models, not sprites. And the model is low quality enough that if you do convert it to sprites, you'll probably need to do some touch-up to make it look good.

Don't forget Hexen's bats. I can think of one Stronghold map in particular they would work well in :).

There's also Scuba Steve's daisy skin, featured in Skulltag and used in a couple of .wads.

Also, some of shtbag's .wads have various insects, such as fireflies. I'll check through them when I get home.

Enjay's Marine Assault has some dogs, if I recall correctly.

They're modified ones from Wolfenstein 3D.

The sheeps from Hexen 2 are indeed very bad models and it definitely needs touch-ups that I am not capable of doing. The dogs from Wolf3D are definitely too large and "not dumb enough" to be environment critters.

@Nick - Shtbag's stuff sounds useful, thx for your help already.

There is definitely a small wasp-like insect that comes from one of the build games (I think). I've got them in a WAD somewhere so you can have them if you like.

You are, of course, more than welcome to use the dogs in Marine assault if you want to. They are Wolfenstein dogs (or rather Spear of Destiny, I think) but I recoloured them a bit because the original sprites were blue on a lot of the areas that I changed to grey.

There is also this idea that Phocas Island creator had that was awesome but he ended up not using it or took it out or something. In PI2 at one point during the betas he used 1x1 black pixels to represent ants and had them everywhere.

I thought about that too. Never did it though. My "inspiration" was the flies in Quake2. Of course, with scaling, you can make actual ant (etc) graphics and scale them down to 1 pixel size.

I think that Blood had bats, though I could be mis-remeberring.

I don't exactly remember which Daniel (not you  ) mod is it, but I think it has both rats and spiders. The one that only comes to my mind is Arsenal.
