Exactly; it does not matter if the monster is actually looking at you or not. Ambush better describes their behaviour* in certain situations. Let me set up a scenario:
4 imps are hiding behind the walls of a corridor. They aren't aware of the marine yet, so they're concentrating their view on the door. A few minutes later, they hear gunshots, making them aware of the marine so they start to look in all directions for him but they don't seek him out. He opens the door and they attack.
* I usually spell it behavior but I tend to spell things differently each time I post.
