It actually makes sense!
If you try it yourself and grab some sort of staff like this, with both hands near the middle, you could swing from right to left and the right hand would be the fartherst away from you, just like in the sprite sheet... same with the left hand if you swing in the opposite direction!

Those frames look awesome btw... especially the hands/arms :)

edit: beaten by DoomRater... kind of :P

Its exactly this. You have long staff and you can attack with both ends. To be precise you can attack with both ends and with the middle part, and you can also release one hand and punch etc... One friend says that staff have three ends, fighting against him is very tricky...

Final weapon will have combo system where you attack alternatively with both ends, when you hold the button little longer you will made thrust (larger damage, slower). Secondary attack will be block but when you press secondary twice you will make large chop with both hands (massive damage and langer range, but slow down movement).

Personally, I always interpreted the staff and the wand as being the same weapon -- one "magic" end to shoot enemies, and when out of ammo you can prod them with the metal end. Kinda like hitting people with the butt of a rifle.

If you've played Heretic II, it explains that the staff and wand aren't the same weapon. The staff had a "blade" added to it in Heretic II, which is your melee wepaon in that game. The wand you see when you watch Corvus killing the D'sparil with it during the opening.

I just started up Heretic 2, to make sure I didn't miss anything, and it doesn't seem like there's an opening custscene, when you start a new game (besides him waking out of a portal, on the docks).

I think it was a Phoenix rod. In intro video it can be seen when he enters the portal.

Yeah, I played through Heretic 2, and I wouldn't use it as a source for Heretic 1 stuff since there's quite a few discrepancies. He actually throws a fireball at D'Sparil, who catch fire and dies. And first he throws said fireballs from a hellstaff, then he grabs it from his back but I don't see an elven wand.

Ghastly: you definitely missed something. The cutscene starts with "Activision presents" though.

Wow, they pronounced D'Sparil in a completely different way than I do.

I pronounce it "Di - sparil ".

Such as the talking tome of power, or the fact that Corvus uses different weapons. The only returning weapon was the Hellstaff, and I don't think it functioned the same way.

The normal mode did,, but the powered up mode is some wierd beam thing. The Red-Rain bow took the Hellstaff's powered-up mode.

In the video, he first uses a Heretic II spell, than the firemace, before finally chucking his whole Phoenix Rod at D'Sparil - like 40 shots used up at once. :D

First weapon he uses is clearly a Hellstaff.
