Re: [SPRITES] Spriting Carnival!!
I generally just buy the student versions of all the software I use - Photoshop, Painter X, etc - if there are no legally free alternatives. When I was a kid, I had no money, and thus had to bootleg software off the internet. I have enough money to buy it now, so I tend to buy them. I will give this Sculptris a try, it looks relatively easy, like Google Sketchup.

Blender is a great program, if you are having a difficult time with it, you should do some tutorials out of this wikibook: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro
After you feel that you understand the UI, you should be ready to move on to your own projects.

Your mileage may vary, different learning styles and all, but when I was trying to lean Blender I hated that book and got nowhere with it. If you find likewise, try this guy's videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/jbeckneisdnetcq75 wrote:Blender is a great program, if you are having a difficult time with it, you should do some tutorials out of this wikibook: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro

Re: [SPRITES] Spriting Carnival!!
Progress has been slow on this guy due to RL and being anxious to get torn into ToP II properly. Still, only a couple of rotations and the normal death frames to do and he's done:

That second frame doesn't really seem like an ender of an attack. Maybe a third frame, or something?

Re: [SPRITES] Spriting Carnival!!
It's one of the ptifalls I've found when working with a 2D sprite. Hopefully It will make more sense when the 2, 3 and 4 rotations are done - he's holding the axe outward at roughly a 30°angle in that frame (about the angle it would be when it hits you), but it's difficult to convey properly. I had a similar problem with the knife on the other one, seems that lo-res 2D sprites and sharp objects pointed at the camera don't go together very wellXutaWoo wrote:That second frame doesn't really seem like an ender of an attack. Until you hit the 2, 3 and 4 frames, that little white speck in the F1 frame could be anything. Once you view it at an angle, it's definitely a stabbing motion.
Unless you're talking about a third frame where the axe's blade is around knee-height, which would make sense when he swings and misses, but it would look a bit weird when he connects. Still, I'll hopefully get the spritesheet cleared over the weekend and we'll see how it flies when it has some DECORATE on the go.
@Torm: Cheers, man. I'm actually quite surprised at how these have turned out so far. I don't really consider myself a sprite artist, and when I began working on these enemies I'd been wondering why there hadn't been too many attempts at this sort of thing before outside of the Blake Stone edits. Now I understand

Looking good there. This is probably the first female doom enemy I've see yet (one that is made in the Doom style).scalliano wrote:

Re: [SPRITES] Spriting Carnival!!
Cheers. I actually finished this enemy a while ago, just posted up those frames to show that I'm still a bit rusty when it comes to front-angle melee frames
She's based on the zombified Illucia sprites, though other than her head, I basically drew over the originals to make sure all the body parts were in the right place (and the right size
).

Re: [SPRITES] Spriting Carnival!!
This hasn't been touched up yet to be made into actual sprites perse but the idea is there.

I think you can make another female scientist variation with trousers.scalliano wrote:It's one of the ptifalls I've found when working with a 2D sprite.
