I'm actually quite surprised at how well that translates, although I can see you've re-touched it by hand.

It's much better when you choose the right settings. "Median Cut" is pretty much garbage for translating things to sprites -- Optimized Octree is where it's at.

Assuming PSP7, of course, since it's apparently the canon PSP. :P

This is one of the main areas where I hoped to see improvements in Gimp 2.8 but they don't seem to think it's worth doing.
I had PSP5 free on a magazine cover 10 years ago. Never worked out how to use masks or layers though.
