In the PSX Doom engine, this is actually done with two thing flags in the map editor - one to make the thing transparent, and one to make it inverted and stronger. Here you'll see the ssg in action. Great sound.
The rocket launcher fires at a lower speed as well.
The chaingun also fires slower I think. Plasmarifle too.
