That's probably a good idea.
Note: You can get most classic id Software games for dirt cheap at Half.com. You'll have to wait 2 or 3 days, but I've found games like Hexen there for only $8.00. You can also find hard-to-get games like the Quake mission packs (which are out of print and, consequently, damn near impossible to find).

Hexen is another id Software game that uses the same technology as Doom and Doom II. It's a lot more complex, however, and requires quite a bit of puzzle solving. As far as I know, it was the first game to utilize the "hub" system of levels - essentially, you can move back and forth between levels, completing them in "clusters" at a time.
Unlike Doom and Quake, the setting for Hexen is a sort of dark medieval fantasy, and you are given the option of three different classes, each with unique strengths, weaknesses, and weapons.
You can probably find a demo for Hexen by following this link:

Also, I think a shareware version of Quake can be found here:

Indeed, for the average Gamer, who only enjoys blasting monsters en masse, it can seem a nightmare of boredom. However, for the Gamer how likes to hunt and outwit his/her enemies, HEXEN can only enhance once analytical skills. Remember where you have been, take some notes, retrace your steps, engage brain every once in a while, and HEXEN can be a lot of fun. And to boot, there are lots and tough monsters to blast.Liam wrote:... and requires quite a bit of puzzle solving. ...

Oh puh-leeze. Hexen is just plain dreadful! There's no "outwitting" your enemies. There's "Go to point A in map B and hit switch C, then point D in map E to hit switch F, and finally point G in map H to hit switch I to have something obscure happen at point J. Point J is a point in some random map that you may have been to sometime in the last three hours of play, but other than that you're on your own. Go figure out what just happened."
Along the way you sometimes get to shoot at monsters with pathetically underpowered weapons such that taking out the measliest creature is an exercise in patience. (Not so much having to patiently take the creature down... just trying not to puke at having to hear the EXACT SAME PAIN SOUNDS OVER AND OVER AGAIN FOR THREE FRIGGIN' HOURS WHILE YOU TRY TO DOWN THE ENEMY)
Hexen introduced ACS scripting, fine. That was its one redeeming quality. It then completely abused and misused it in ways that, were ACS considered a sentient being, would have constituted statutory rape on the part of the Raven programmers. ACS scripting done for ZDoom by people around these forums is so much more clean, more professional, and less of a headache on the end user. The stock Hexen levels just deserve to die a slow and painful death.

Brain, shmrain. Hexen was a pain in the arse at times.
While I must admit that most of the puzzles WERE well designed (even moreso in the expansion), a great deal of them were totally ridiculous and mind-boggling, and that's as in "not fun".
"LOL I hit that switch and now I'm sure that 3 levels back, where I was last time I played, a 32 unit-wide sector has moved to reveal a switch in a dark niche which I must now find LOL"...
Please...
