Just my $0.02.

[EDIT]How would you like this thread showing up here one day? Careful what you wish for...[/EDIT]
Mmmm... I kinda like the statement from the last post. "That sig's a bit large"...

Seriously, though, limiting the signature to 1 character does seem a bit *too* restrictive. If you really don't want any images, setting it to 10 or something like that would still suffice.

To each his own I suppose, but I'd much rather have no signature at all.

I tried making the signature limit 0 characters, but the phpBB wouldn't let me. So I settled on one character, since it's still pretty obvious that you can't have signatures. Why? Because all they do is take up space.

True. Not that much, though; if you allowed, say, 10 characters for a sig, it'd still take 100,000 posts at *least* to reach even one megabyte of space. And by the time you have that many posts, one megabyte won't matter anymore. :)

I dunno about these boards, but some store "signature per user", and when a message is displayed, the signature of the user is looked up, so the sig ain't really stored in the posts. The side effect, minimal impact is that the sig may change on old posts.

Agreed. And people are never happy with just a sig either. They start including pics and so on.

He's not talking about space on the site. He's talking about visual space in the thread. Your signature may be cute, it may be clever, and people may chuckle at it, ponder about it, or even think it's worthwhile the first 20 times. Then it gets old. Sometimes, it even gets in the way and confuses people.

Signatures belong at the end of letters, not on forum posts.

One might say the same about usericons and custom titles...

They're nowhere near the body of the message, so they don't add any confusion nor do your eyes have to pass over them while scrolling down the page. In addition, they don't add any length to the page, thus threads will have fewer pages and less vertical room to scroll through.

In fact, icons are a good idea because they stand out and let you know who's speaking without having to look for the name. It's easy to tell when Randy adds something to a thread because his avatar is quite distinctive; As are the avatars of most other people on these boards. I know to put on my bullshit-filter when I see a galloping horse, for example....

But avatars and custom titles aren't in the message body. They're over to the side and clearly separate. If a 10 character signature is large enough for you, then you should be able to use it as your title if it's important to you.

It's not that important for me really - I merely don't think there's really any good reason to disallow (short) sigs. But in the end, it doesn't matter.

I just removed any sig and custom title. I do not need any!

Having signatures on or off doesn't bother me either way, but if they were on and images were allowed in signatures I'd probably kill myself.
