[WIP] DOOM Arena

Post by charlesp1138 »

Image

The goal of this wad will be to give an approximation of what Quake III Arena levels would be like in the Doom engine and with zDoom-style architecture.

UPDATE: I'm not trying to recreate Q3A style gameplay with the weapons and medals and such, just seeing how the levels hold up play-wise and trying to challenge myself to make more advanced Q3 style levels in the older (though more advanced due to zDoom/gzDoom) engine.

I'll be starting with Tier 1 and doing the levels in order. Chances are my editing skills will get better as I go along.

Soooo, I'm not much for hyping stuff up and I'm fairly new (coming back) to the editing world so, I thought I'd let screenshots speak for me. The following are of the 99% complete DM0, the intro level. I'm new to this, so be gentle. But any criticism is most welcome.

A bit like Quake 2, but +1 from me! Mixing up the map styles and colors will be cool.

Yeah, most of the textures in the DM0 map are from Quake 2. They're pretty distinctly... monochrome.

Interesting so far -- looks pretty faithful and not too bad visually, though the pillars sticking out of the wall in the third screenshot are a bit concerning since it looks like you can get stuck on those really easily during combat.

Can't wait to see Longest Yard. :P

Nicely done so far! You've definitely nailed the Quake 2 look about it. Do you have a server for this up at all? I'd be more than happy to help with testing if need be.

If it's the first, not really. Unless Skulltag already has recreations/rethinkings of the Q3A levels. If it's the second, I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I'll probably make it work in Skulltag simply because of the deathmatch-only nature of the levels.

Best off making it for Zandronum if you plan on making it for ST. ST perished earlier this year I used to play on there a lot of the time :(

No I mean Skulltag was basically "Doom meets Quake 3 Arena", with deathmatch centric powerups, an announcer, weapons like grenade launcher, railgun and BFG10k and jump pads.

Yeah, me not so good with words. Specifically, I'm trying to recreate Q3A levels in zDoom. When I said "what Quake III Arena would be like in the Doom engine" I should have said, "what Quake III Arena levels would be like in a Doom deathmatch."

I r confusing. I'll be updating the original post.

I thought you were pretty clear, nonetheless, I'm hyped! I love Q3A, especially it's maps, digging what you're doing with the project here. Keep it up good sir!
