Stance on AI generated material?

Post by STX83 »

I'll be including AI generated sprites in my WAD. The WAD has not shared yet.
As long as i commnicate it in my post with the WAD and the read me text file, I am all good?

I am trying to limit the number of AI generated images.
I used it for the logo and i am trialing it with 2 new actors

We have a section on the use of AI in the forum rules. viewtopic.php?t=27644 It's the third spoiler down.
However, AI is changing rapidly and already AI can do things that possibly weren't thought about when the rules were written.

It's also worth noting that there are a lot of vocal members of the Doom community who are very anti-AI. If you release an AI-heavy mod, then the discussion around it may end up being dominated by its use of AI.

I've actually been having an in-depth discussion about precisely this matter with someone over the last couple of days. They are a talented artist who is using AI as a step in their artistic process, but the vast majority of the work is being done by the human artist both before and after the AI is used. I suspect that falls within the spirit of the "Allowed AI content" criteria outlined in the rules, even if what they are doing isn't explicitly stated in the rules.

I don't think anyone wants to see a totally AI generated mod. However, I feel that if AI is used as a tool to assist the human process (like many non-AI tools are), so that the bulk of a the work still reflects and relies on human creativity, and the use of AI in the mod is declared openly, then a mod is probably still keeping within the spirit of the rules that I linked to.

At least that's my interpretation of our rules within the present landscape of what AI can do. Note, that is my personal interpretation and it is not necessarily the same as that of zdoom.org as a whole.

I am very much interested in this topic as well.

As a visually impaired individual, it doesn't inhibit me from coding, but it does effect my ability to deal with image editing. That said, I wouldn't want to constantly ask other people to help with sprites etc etc, but at the same time, I prefer the human element even though I'd be using AI in mods. I understand the anti-AI sentiment and agree with it to a degree, but in terms of accessibility, it's a game changer, pun intended :)

There's a Resident Evil related thing I've been wanting to do, but seeing well enough to line up the 3d models well enough to create the sprites is next to impossible.
