[Release 1.0a] Generic Weapons Mod

Post by Jarewill »

Hello there.
I realised I have a bunch of mods in my folder that I never released publicly.
So I decided to get this one out there.

According to my folder, this mod is from October 20th, 2020, so this is quite a delay between creation and posting.
If I recall correctly, I really liked the sprites posted in this thread, so I made a mod using them.
There isn't really much to it though, just a Generic Weapons Mod, but at least they look cool!

Without any further ado, download:
[DOWNLOAD]
This mod uses:
- Secondary fire to "squint" down the gun sights.
- Reload to reload.
- Zoom to activate "bullet time" (needs to be held down).

The weapon is positioned a bit strangely. You should position it to the right.

Yeah every single weapon's position in first person is quite awkward. Other than that, this mod is pretty alright! Voxel models on weapons are really neat. Also pretty impressive that my Beretta ammo is infinite.

One problem? That might be the game unnecessarily giving me a lot of UZI ammo.

I thought the offsets were fine, but I guess they are pretty awkward. I have adjusted them more to the right, so let me know if it's better now.

Well, the clips were always the most common ammo type in most Doom mapsets, so I'm unsure what can be done about that.

Hey, thanks for checking it out!
Your sprites were really good, so I just felt the need to turn them into a mod.
I hope I did them justice.

Gone with a quick spin with this and so far it's amazing!!! Pretty simple and enjoyable.
Well, the fact Crozi/Chronoteeth is an amazing spriter also helps, and i know, since Kriegsland is 90% part of some dedicated spritework love.

Now, for the feedback:

- Shotgun pumping sound cuts the firing sound down. Maybe play it in another slot?
- Some guns still need to be thrown to the right, being the pistol, BFG and uzi, something around 15 pixels. For all the others, i'd offset them around... maybe 7 pixels or so.

- BFG projectile is straight while the gun is angled, so it looks off, but most importantly, it looks like it came from a centered weapon. Maybe that's the intention, but i think it's worth to point out.
- Pistol reloading is butter smooth, however it feels pretty static. maybe some hand feedback as the magazine is replaced, or maybe if the hand could lower at the same time and create some "bump" to let the player know the mag is in?
- Since the mod aims for some simplicity, i wouldn't suggest new sounds, however, if you intend in updating the mod, i'm pretty sure you are aware of such thing.

- Voxel pickups are good-looking;
- Bullet time implementation is ingenious and pretty cool;
- Code is pretty tidy and organized!

I am having fun and i wonder what else you got in your pockets if you want to keep working on this mod. :D

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback!

I have fixed the pumping sounds and adjusted the offsets more, I hope they are alright now.
I have also tried to make the pistol reload animation better, but to no avail. I am unsure how to approach that.

I understand the issue with projectiles being centered, but I found offsetting the projectiles will mess with aiming.
While that's more of an issue with the railgun than the BFG, it still wouldn't be nice if the projectile simply vanished because it touched the wall you were hugging.

Thanks for checking it out!
