MrTaterz & Ac!d present: Vanilla Machine-Pistol!

Ever wanted to use the weapon on the front cover of The Ultimate Doom™? Now you can.

The Machine Pistol is a Pistol replacer that fires rapidly, at the cost of accuracy and a Duke Nukem-style reloading system. You will no longer be able to snipe with your starter weapon, but it benefits from being able to fire without wasting two bullets per trigger pull, unlike the Chaingun. Here is a download button to try it out yourself. The file is extremely lightweight at only 48kb, so you have nothing to lose by trying it out and seeing how it performs.

If for whatever reason you would prefer that it replaces the Chaingun instead of the Pistol, Ac!d has helped in a big way by providing an update to the mod that makes it so you can choose to have it replace the Chaingun or the Pistol with the change of a single CVar.

Spoiler:

Special thanks to sonik.o.fan for making the weapon sprites, and to Skelegant for making an awesome firing frame that fits the weapon sprites.

Pretty cool! I have always wondered why the weapon shown on the menu splash screen never showed up in the game. Now I no longer need to, thanks to you. :D

That said, I do not understand why the weapon switches to a different sprite when you select or deselect it. Also, the reloading animation feels completely unnecessary, in addition to happening every time I let go of the trigger, even if I have only fired a couple of shots.

The reloading animation is meant to balance the weapon similarly to the Plasma Gun. I may just end up adding in actual reloading so you have to reload the weapon every 25 shots; I'll also change the select and deselect animations.

Okay, I updated the weapon so that it has Duke Nukem-style reloading now.

The weapon should be pretty much fixed up and usable now.

Thank you for making it and also for the quick updates!

i will say that, this is cool. 1 thing i think would be cool, is if you could reload the gun at anytime. i mean i know it's ala Duke 3D with the ammo and the reloading situation stuff. but like. having at least an option to reload it at anytime would be nice. also. what of the chances of having a version of this weapon with it using the Duke hands? i sometimes likes to replace Doom handed weapons with Duke ones. specially in Zandronum, cause i often rock a Duke player skin

Is the Machine Pistol supposed to be perfectly accurate in the Chaingun replacement mod?

I initially thought that this one would fix the vanilla Pistol by making it better at sniping, which in turn would make it closer to what John Romero had in mind for the weapon:

“For Doom, it was really important that every time you got a new weapon, it never made any previous weapons useless. That was a critical design characteristic. We’re going to add a new thing that can’t negate anything that came before. So how do you get the chaingun and not cancel out the pistol? It’s to do with how much ammo it eats, and how inaccurate it is over distance – the pistol eats less ammo and is extremely accurate at a distance.”

I always loved the machine pistol in Doom cover and I'm really happy to see it rising in popularity recently. This vanilla-friendly version of it is perfect, you did a great job MrTaterz!

I like it, however I think the muzzle flash is a bit to big, but maybe that's just me.

Am I the only one who wants this as a simple graphic replacement for the chaingun?

That is great! Now if only for the sake of consistency, the Chaingunner could be replaced with a Machine-Pistol Trooper...

Nah, I kid.
