If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Looking for some good Diablo-likes. Any recommendations?

Post by Nems »

I'm trying to get back into the hack-n-slash genre. I've played Torchlight, Torchlight 2, and I'm currently in the process of downloading Path of Exile but like a junkie I need more. :V Bonus points if they have procedural generation of dungeons like in Torchlight/2 and, have a new game plus, and/or they have a sci-fi theme though neither are really a necessity.

Titan Quest is alright. It just got an updated re-release. The world layout is static, but character building is classless (you pick your specialization early on but not immediately, and eventually get the chance to pick at least one other one) and equipment has only stat restrictions, not class restrictions.

I got Grim Dawn as a Christmas present - I think it's decent.

* I second Titan Quest plus its expansion Immortal Throne. While the character is classless at the start, you pick two masteries at levels 2 and 8. There are a total of 36 different combinations, and depending on which skills you get, the same "class" can vary wildly. It deviates a little from the Diablo 2 formula, since the game is rather colorful and centered around classical mythology, so no grim and depressive setting, but I find it incredibly fun still while looking pretty at the same time.

* Grim Dawn, which has also been suggested, is more akin in gameplay and setting to Diablo 2, done by the same people who made Titan Quest. There are less masteries in this game, and in my opinion too many abilities are passive or visually underwhelming (I repeat, in my opinion). Still fun, though.

Both have mods to increase difficulty, or to provide skill modifications, new masteries... so you won't be left out of options if you dislike something.

* Hellgate London might also be up your alley, since it's more apocalyptic in a sci-fi futuristic setting invaded by demons. Dungeons are also procedurally generated, and mook bosses have ridiculous randomly generated names (like in Diablo). It has both energy weapons and futuristic energy swords, so whatever you choose. Oh, and magic! It was pretty interesting, but it became boring for me after a certain point in the game. NOTE: Unlike in Titan Quest and Grim Dawn, you can't recover skill points that you spent on skills that didn't convince you.

* Sacred is another ARPG that can be very entertaining: ithas several characters to play with, and its skill system is very different from what is seen in other games. Set in a typical fantasy world in which you will face several betrayals, gather elements of an ancient weapon, fight incredibly dangerous dragons, etc. It also has an expansion pack which was released for free, and that adds 2 more characters to select: the dwarf, and the demon lady.

Enough recommendations? :P

Not a fan of the genre, though I did enjoy Realms of Ancient Wars and Champions: Return to Arms(If you have a PS2 or a computer that can emulate it.), I hope my 2 cents are helpful, there is also the first Legacy of Kain Blood Omen game, but the only thing it really shares with these games is the camera, everything else is a different experience.

If you're okay with a game that's more story-driven and dialogue heavy, Dungeon Siege 2 (and 1 also) is great, and the class system is pretty fun IMO.
Avoid the third one though, they messed it up.

There's also The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (yes that whole thing is the name). A very solid but not widely known Diablo-esque game. The series has three titles but I've only played the first one. Was fun though.

My family is in love with Path of Exile, though it's an MMO, and perhaps better with friends as a result. Notable for a huge skill tree and high amounts of build customization. Relatively daunting, but worth checking out.

I would like to agree with those who mentioned Grim Dawn, as I find it to be a fairly well-made and polished game though it gets rather grindy if you're looking for a specific item or if you like to craft a lot, the graphics are somewhat monotone and the last difficulty is almost excessively punishing. That aside, I still find it to be a pretty cool game.

I cannot in good conscience recommend Hellgate: London, as I remember it as being pretty bad. Then again, it has been more than a decade since I last played it, so it might have gotten better since. Titan Quest is a solid choice which was made by the people who later created Grim Dawn, and while Sacred is somewhat crude owing to its age I recall it as being a rather entertaining game.

I also want to mention Chronicon which seems like a rather promising little Diablo-like. The graphics are very retro but you have a fair bit of freedom in how you design your character, and the basic gameplay seems finished even though the game is still in development.

Thirding this. Grim Dawn is by the same creators and different in its gameplay (it's on a smaller scope but surprisingly effective).
Path of Exile is very good if you're a hardcore Hack N' Slash player and speedrunning is something you want to get into, as well. It's completely free, the only paid stuff is cosmetic.

I've been meaning to try Nox some day. Can't recommend it since I obviously haven't played it myself though :)

Shadow Warrior 2 has certain Diablo elements. Steer clear of Borderlands though, boring as sin.

If you're a fan of the Chamions games, be sure to also check out Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 &2. They use the same engine, and the first game is by the same developer (the second game being developed by Black Isle.)

If you want some non-fantasy Diablo alikes, there's also the X-Men: Legends and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games.
