Well, many people see my name and assume I'm from California, or that I'm female. Someone on CoD once said "Hey Cali girl, how you doin'?"
Others assume it's a reference to
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which I am remiss in not watching yet.
However, it's actually from early 2002-2003 when I started really going on the internet regularly, in high school computer labs. Before that, my experience with the internet pretty much consisted of StarCraft on Battle.net, and the occasional dial-up excursion. I usually used a variation on my real name. In addition to StarCraft, I had gotten a few programs via parent-approved, all-night download sessions, including DoomCAD, a doom wad utility I can't remember the name of (started with a 'W' I think, not WadAuthor...), and
TrueSpace, a free 3D graphics suite from the... wait for it...
Caligari Corporation.
Yep, I picked my handle from a company I thought had a cool-sounding name, because I couldn't think of anything else. Yahoo.com recommended the timeless advice of tacking on a number, like a birth year, in the case my chosen name was taken (which it was). And thus,
Caligari_87 was born.
Unfortunately, I tried to keep the underscore for a while, but turns out a lot of sites don't accept that character. So I have various other legacy variants like caligari.87 and caligari-87 hanging around, but I've been using simply Caligari87 for a few years now. And that's the epic tale of me.
EDIT:
Wayback Machine archive of caligari.com, before it disappeared. Oh the nostalgia!
