How to begin editing a wad

Post by Cornelius Vanderbilt »

I decided that I need to tackle this certain wad as I can't find any patches or fixes for it with the game play mod I have. To be specific, I'm trying to make Wolfendoom work with Wolfenstein X, so what I need to know is what programs should I get to begin editing the maps in the wad so that certain keys can drop after defeating a boss. Please, I'm very new to this and I might have a hard time understanding.

The first tool you need to use is SLADE, to open the wad files and see what they contain.

Then you need to keep bookmarks to useful Doom wikis for technical explanations on how it works. These two: (Apologies for the ZDoom wiki being half-busted at the moment. The images don't work anymore. Fortunately, they're generally not necessary to understand the articles; you'll just get ugly error messages about broken thumbnails.)
