Lights will not make polyobjs casts shadows unless the light also casts shadows from "normal" geometry.

Hm, this one's a problem. For performance reasons any light checks if it touches some geometry before deciding to be subjected to shadowmapping.
For technical reasons this cannot handle polyobjects - but removing the check can cause serious performance issues.
